A novel and efficient method for calculating beam shadows on exterior surfaces of buildings in dense urban contexts

Xiaoyu Wang et al.

Summary: A novel neighbourhood shading building surfaces determination criterion is proposed to improve the efficiency and accuracy of calculating beam shadows on building exterior surfaces in dense urban contexts. The criterion was evaluated in two case studies, showing that it efficiently determines the neighbourhood building surfaces and significantly enhances the efficiency of shadow calculation. The integration of the criterion with the polygon clipping method is more efficient and accurate for calculating beam shadows in dense urban contexts.

A fast calculation tool for accessing the shading effect of surrounding buildings on window transmitted solar radiation energy

Jianxiu Wen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of different designs of surrounding buildings on the window transmitted solar radiation energy (WTSRE) of the target building. A method for rapidly assessing the shading effect of surrounding buildings at the design stage was proposed and a SketchUp plug-in named MOOSAS-FastSolar was developed based on this method. By comparing the results with EnergyPlus, the method significantly reduced the calculation time while maintaining accuracy, and provided energy-efficient design recommendations at the conceptional design stage.

Energy analysis studying the effect of solar shading on daylight factors and cooling hours in an extreme weather

Sawsan Dagher et al.

Summary: Solar heat gains have a significant impact on overheating in buildings and require careful design in extreme climates. Reducing solar transmittance and improving building details can minimize surface heat transfer. The use of shading systems can reduce solar gains and improve thermal comfort. A case study of a school building was analyzed to ensure thermal comfort. After applying shading devices, cooling hours were reduced by up to 4%.

Study of surrounding buildings' shading effect on solar radiation through windows in different climates

Jianxiu Wen et al.

Summary: This study evaluated and compared the impact of shading on the performance of window-transmitted solar radiation energy in different climates in China. The results showed that the energy-saving potential of shading intensified from northern to southern China, with west-facing windows performing best in terms of energy efficiency.

Solar shading and multi-zone thermal simulation: Parsimonious modelling at urban scale

Enora Garreau et al.

Summary: Urban building energy modelling tools (UBEM) are being developed to address various energy issues at a city scale, selecting the right level of model complexity can be challenging and a novel approach is proposed to evaluate the impact of different thermal zoning methods. In most cases, dividing buildings per floor is found to be the most parsimonious choice for thermal heating demand simulation at district scale.

Summary: There is a wide variety of building energy simulation software, but many of them are too complex for early-stage design decisions. In recent years, research groups and software developers have focused on developing simplified and user-friendly web-based energy simulation tools, providing more convenient options for building engineers and architects.
