On optimal triple friction pendulum base-isolation design for steel moment-frame buildings employing value-based seismic design methodology

Arash Rahgozar et al.

Summary: This paper utilizes a value-based seismic design methodology to optimize the mechanical and geometrical properties of triple friction pendulum bearings (TFPBs). The study considers the initial construction cost and lifetime seismic losses as the value components, while also accounting for the extreme failure conditions of the TFPB that have been less explored in previous literature. The research takes into account the minimum code provisions and practical limitations for friction pendulum isolated buildings, and develops a new cost function for TFPBs from real projects. The findings reveal that the value-based design approach significantly increases the total value of the isolated moment-resisting frame building.

Finite element analysis of reinforced concrete deep beams with square web openings using damage plasticity model

Mona Saleh et al.

Summary: This study investigated the behavior of RC deep beams with web openings using numerical simulations. The results of the validated specimens showed good agreement with the experimental ones. The study found that the presence of openings impairs the bearing capacity of RC deep beams, especially larger openings located through the shear zone. The behavior of RC deep beams with web openings mainly depends on the size and location of the openings, as well as factors like shear span-to-height ratio, concrete compressive strength, and reinforcement ratios.

Bridge-weigh-in-motion approach for simultaneous multiple vehicles on concrete-box-girder bridges

Amin Moghadam et al.

Summary: Bridge-weigh-in-motion (BWIM) is a powerful system for obtaining accurate traffic information to assist in bridge design, maintenance, and management. The existing BWIM approaches are not suitable for simultaneous multiple-vehicle cases on multiple-lane bridges. In this study, a novel approach is proposed that addresses this limitation by eliminating the non-localized portion of the strain response and retaining the localized portion for enhanced detection. The results show that this approach is capable of accurately estimating the axle weights and gross vehicle weight (GVW) of the traversing trucks in complex multiple-truck cases.

Eman Saleh et al.

Summary: This study discusses the efficient assessment of concrete strength in existing structures using Non-Destructive testing (NDT) in conjunction with destructive techniques. Through extensive statistical analysis, it was found that earth mover's distance and Crame & PRIME;r-von Mises distance outperform the traditional t-test in identifying heterogeneous concrete zones, and are recommended for concrete assessment. Additionally, different core sampling plans were investigated to reduce the probability of inaccurate concrete strength estimation, enhancing the reliability of the assessment.

Replaceable fuse buckling-restrained brace (BRB): Experimental cyclic qualification testing and NLFEA modeling

Zaid A. Al-Sadoon et al.

Summary: This paper presents a newly patented type of Buckling Restrained Braces (BRBs) system, which consists of a stainless-steel core bar inserted into a buckling inhibiting unit made of mild steel pipe. The system allows for easy replacement of core and end units. Testing was conducted on six BRB samples, and only the full threaded core and smooth shaved core bars passed the qualification test. The threaded cross-sectional type of core bar showed the highest energy dissipation and attained ductility. A 3D NLFEA model created using ABAQUS software showed good agreement with experimental results.

Flexural Performance of RC Beams Strengthened with Pre-Stressed Iron-Based Shape Memory Alloy (Fe-SMA) Bars: Numerical Study

Ahmed Khalil et al.

Summary: This study numerically evaluates the impact of pre-stressed Fe-SMA bars on the structural behavior of reinforced concrete beams and compares their performance with other strengthening techniques. The numerical model correlates well with experimental results, showing that larger Fe-SMA bars significantly increase the load-carrying capacity of the beams. The pre-stressing level and concrete grade have negligible effects on the ultimate strength, while increasing the pre-stressing level and concrete strength enhance the load-deflection response in the serviceability stage. Using 2T22 mm of Fe-SMA bars results in better structural performance with comparable cost.

Selection of Ground Motion Intensity Measures and Evaluation of the Ground Motion-Related Uncertainties in the Probabilistic Seismic Demand Analysis of Highway Bridges

Huihui Li et al.

Summary: Probabilistic seismic demand analysis is a critical step in the performance-based earthquake engineering design framework, and its accuracy is influenced by various sources of uncertainties, especially the variability of ground motions. A study on a representative reinforced concrete continuous girder bridge investigated the effectiveness and practicality of twenty-eight seismic intensity measures. The study also examined the effects of ground motion-related uncertainties on the analysis of highway bridges. It was concluded that the efficiency and sufficiency of the intensity measures play important roles, and the uncertainties from the seismic records significantly affect the probabilistic seismic demand analysis of highway bridges.

FEA Investigation of Elastic Buckling for Functionally Graded Material (FGM) Thin Plates with Different Hole Shapes under Uniaxial Loading

Mohamed Elkafrawy et al.

Summary: This paper presents an investigation on the linear eigenvalue buckling of functionally graded material (FGM) plates under uniaxial loading. The study analyzes the effect of the size and geometry of openings in the FGM plate as well as the aspect ratio and power law index on the critical buckling load. The results reveal that increasing the size of the opening and the aspect ratio decreases the critical buckling load, while decreasing the power law index increases it. Moreover, the diamond shape opening shows the highest performance in terms of critical buckling load.
