Effects of urban tree planting on thermal comfort and air quality in the street canyon in a subtropical climate

Zhengtong Li et al.

Summary: Through computational fluid dynamics simulations, we investigated the overall effects of tree planting inside street canyons and compared four parameters of seven common tree species in Hong Kong: leaf area index, tree height, crown spread, and planting density. The results showed that taller trees with lower near-ground leaf density are better options for reducing physiological equivalent temperature while minimizing pollutant accumulation under high ambient wind speed. Larger-crown trees on the windward side and smaller ones on the leeward side can simultaneously decrease physiological equivalent temperature and maintain better air quality. Increasing leaf area index or planting density can improve thermal comfort but may lead to higher pollutant accumulation. Shortening the length of a street has a comparable effect on different tree factors, while the effect of trees becomes limited as canyon depth increases.

Impacts of viaduct and geometry configurations on the distribution of traffic-related particulate matter in urban street canyon

Kai -Fa Lu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of viaduct-ground emissions and viaduct-canyon configurations on particle distribution in urban street canyons. The results revealed that particle number concentrations exhibited bimodal distribution patterns, with one peak at ground level and another at the viaduct height. The study also found that optimized viaduct-canyon configurations and ground emissions played significant roles in particle distribution in street canyons. These findings have implications for viaduct design and traffic management to reduce particulate pollution.

Numerical Study on Microclimate and Outdoor Thermal Comfort of Street Canyon Typology in Extremely Hot Weather-A Case Study of Busan, South Korea

Jindong Wu et al.

Summary: As cities are highly vulnerable to climate change, streets play a crucial role in improving urban environment and public health. This study focused on Busan, South Korea, examining the street canyons and tree configurations of different city centers. The research found that morphological factors such as street width and orientation significantly influenced microclimate and thermal comfort. The results suggested that the main street should align with the prevailing wind direction, and shading from adjacent buildings could enhance outdoor thermal comfort.

Does street canyon morphology shape particulate matter reduction capacity by street trees in real urban environments?

Chunping Miao et al.

Summary: The morphology of urban street canyons plays a vital role in outdoor air quality and should be considered when designing tree planting schemes. This study conducted field investigations in residential areas to assess the reduction rate of particulate matter by trees in canyons with different aspect ratios and orientations. The results showed that street trees had the biggest impact on reducing the concentration of fine particulate matter in narrow canyons, while they were most effective in reducing the concentration of coarse particulate matter in wide canyons.
