Fabrication of epoxy/SiO2/ZnO superhydrophobic nanocomposite mesh membranes for oil-water separation: Correlating oil flux to fabrication parameters via Box-Behnken design

Elmira Velayi et al.

Summary: Superhydrophobic nanocomposite mesh membranes were successfully constructed using a scalable spray deposition method without the need for low surface energy modifiers. The main fabrication parameters, including spray solution concentration, SiO2:ZnO mass ratio, and epoxy resin to total nanoparticles mass ratio, were studied using a Box-Behnken design to optimize the permeation flux of the membranes. The results showed that increasing spray solution concentration led to decreased oil flux due to thicker coatings, while the permeation flux first decreased and then slowly increased with an increase in epoxy resin content. The best-performing membrane exhibited high chloroform flux and separation efficiency with specific fabrication parameters.
