Phosphaphenanthrene-Functionalized Benzoxazines Bearing Intramolecularly Hydrogen-Bonded Phenolic Hydroxyl: Synthesis, Structural Characterization, Polymerization Mechanism, and Property Investigation

Rui Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, two novel phosphaphenanthrene-functionalized benzoxazine monomers were synthesized and their structures were investigated. The ring-opening polymerization reactions of both monomers were studied and resulted in thermoset polymers with high thermal stability and low flammability. Computational calculations suggested the formation of intramolecular hydrogen bonds between the phenolic -OH and the P=O in the phosphaphenanthrene functionality, which was consistent with the experimental results. The combination of experimental and computational approaches provided molecular insights into intramolecular hydrogen bonding and its role in polymerization mechanisms, which can be applied in the design of high-performance thermoset polymers.
