Preparation of intrinsic antibacterial silicone rubber with matrix tethering quaternary ammonium salt groups

Fuying Dong et al.

Summary: This paper presents a strategy to prevent leaching of antibacterial agents by tethering quaternary ammonium salt (QAS) groups in the matrix. The hydroxyl-terminated polysiloxanes with QAS groups were successfully synthesized and used to prepare an intrinsic antibacterial silicone rubber with excellent compatibility and durability. The hydrophilicity of the silicone rubber can be adjusted by the content of QAS groups.

Rediscovering Silicones: The Anomalous Water Permeability of Hydrophobic PDMS Suggests Nanostructure and Applications in Water Purification and Anti-Icing

Pei Bian et al.

Summary: Cross-linked polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is water-repellent and highly permeable to water vapor. The vapor transmission rate increases as the membrane thickness decreases, but does not further increase when the film thickness is decreased to a certain level. The mechanism for water permeation is based on proposals for nanoscopically confined water in carbon nanotubes and aquaporins.

Nickel(II)-pyridinedicarboxamide-co-polydimethylsiloxane complexes as elastic self-healing silicone materials with reversible coordination

Konstantin V. Deriabin et al.

Summary: Nickel(II)-pyridinedicarboxamide-co-polydimethylsiloxane complexes were prepared as elastic silicone rubbers. The mechanical properties were controlled by adjusting Ni(II) load, metal to ligand molar ratios, and polydimethylsiloxane unit length, with longer polysiloxane chains and lower Ni(II) load leading to higher elasticity and lower hysteresis. The self-healing efficiency of the complexes was high, with glass transition temperatures varying from -123°C to -112°C.

Synthesis, Characterisation and Antibacterial Properties of Silicone-Silver Thin Film for the Potential of Medical Device Applications

Muhammad Faiz Aizamddin et al.

Summary: Silver particles have attracted significant interest for health and medical applications, with a study demonstrating the synthesis of an Ag particle-based silicone thin film with excellent electrical conductivity and antibacterial activity. However, the larger size of the Ag particles in the film led to reduced mechanical properties compared to pristine silicone film.

Konstantin Deriabin et al.

Summary: By using Py-PDMSs and Bipy-PDMSs as ligands for Co-II coordination, the mechanical properties of the polymer-metal complexes, such as tensile strength and elongation at break, can be significantly improved. Furthermore, changing the main-chain ligand type can further impact the performance of the polymers, including tensile strength and hysteresis.
