Synthesis of P, N and Si-containing waterborne polyurethane with excellent flame retardant, alkali resistance and flexibility via one-step synthetic approach

Lian Feng et al.

Summary: A flame retardant waterborne polyurethane with phosphorus, nitrogen and silicon units (P-N-Si-WPU) was successfully synthesized using a one-step approach. P-N-Si-WPU showed higher limiting oxygen index value and lower peak heat release rate compared to pure waterborne polyurethane. The flame retardant mechanism of P-N-Si-WPU was mainly gas phase flame retardant and condensed phase flame retardant, enhanced by the formation of a thermally stable char layer.
