The empirical support for the radical cure strategy for eliminating Plasmodium vivax in China

Guo-Jing Yang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed historical data of P. vivax incubation periods and relapse patterns in China to understand the effectiveness of the national program in eliminating malaria. The findings showed distinct phenotypes of short- and long-incubation periods for P. vivax parasites, as well as a correlation between sporozoite inoculation and incubation period. A within-host model demonstrated the importance of hypnozoite clearance in controlling malaria epidemics and can inform strategies in other endemic countries.

The COVID-19 epidemic and other notifiable infectious diseases in China

Bing-ke Bai et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 epidemic has had an impact on other infectious diseases in China, with a higher decline rate observed for respiratory infectious diseases compared to diseases transmitted through the digestive tract and animal-borne diseases. The measures implemented by the Chinese government to prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2 have proven effective not only in preventing the spread of respiratory infectious diseases, but also to some extent in preventing the spread of notifiable infectious diseases through other routes.

Spatiotemporal disparities in regional public risk perception of COVID-19 using Bayesian Spatiotemporally Varying Coefficients (STVC) series models across Chinese cities

Chao Song et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the online public attention to the COVID-19 pandemic in 366 Chinese cities using internet search data and developed a regional public risk perception index (PRPI). The findings showed that daily cases of COVID-19 were the most critical factor affecting public attention, followed by urban socioeconomic conditions and daily population mobility. There were substantial spatiotemporal disparities among cities and provinces, suggesting the need for localized approaches in understanding public responses to major public health emergencies.

Changes in Temporal Properties of Notifiable Infectious Disease Epidemics in China During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Population-Based Surveillance Study

Xixi Zhao et al.

Summary: This study found that the prevention and control policies for COVID-19 have a significant reduction effect on outbreaks of other infectious diseases in China. A clear event-related trough was observed after the outbreak of COVID-19, and its decreasing amplitude is related to the infection selectivity and preferred outbreak time of the disease before COVID-19. The study suggests that nonpharmaceutical interventions can be implemented to control a wider range of infectious diseases.
