Interactions between surface water and groundwater in selected tributaries of the Wei River (China) revealed by hydrochemistry and stable isotopes

Lei Zhang et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the hydraulic connectivity between surface water and groundwater in the Wei River watershed in China is generally weak, with different hydrochemical types in the Xin and Jing Rivers. Contributions of precipitation and surface water to groundwater vary between the two rivers.

Surface-water/groundwater exchange in a sand dune lake in the Dry Pampean Plain, Argentina: stable isotopic evidence

C. Echegoyen et al.

Summary: This study used stable isotopes to investigate the hydrological characteristics of a lake in the Dry Pampean Plain. The results showed that evaporation was the main factor influencing the isotopic composition of the lake water, rather than rainfall input. Additionally, the study found that the lake had higher groundwater inflow during the dry season and lower groundwater inflow during the wet season, leading to a decrease in lake level during the wet season. Based on the proportion of water leaving the lake through evaporation, the lake was classified as a throughflow lake with a short water residence time.

Impacts of Climatic Variation and Human Activity on Runoff in Western China

Yinge Liu et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the sensitivity of the hydrological cycle to climatic variation and human activity in the upper- and middle-stream of the Weihe River in western China. Multiple meteorological and hydrological elements, as well as land-use/land-cover change data were used to construct sensitivity and estimation models. The results showed that both climatic variation and human activity have significant impacts on runoff, with climatic variation affecting precipitation and evaporation, and human activity driving underlying surface hydrological processes.

Soil CO2 Controls Short-Term Variation but Climate Regulates Long-Term Mean of Riverine Inorganic Carbon

Bryn Stewart et al.

Summary: The study investigates DIC concentrations in over 100 minimally-impacted rivers in the contiguous United States. The results show that instantaneous concentrations are strongly influenced by changes in river discharge, while mean concentrations are regulated by climate. The study highlights the significance of subsurface flow paths in land-river connectivity and emphasizes the importance of characterizing subsurface CO2 distribution.

Source and Quality of Groundwater Surrounding the Qinghai Lake,NE Qinghai-TibetPlateau

Dong-sheng Li et al.

Summary: Comprehensive studies were conducted on the groundwater in the vicinity of Qinghai Lake, revealing the recharge sources, hydrochemical evolution, and water quality. Findings showed that groundwater mainly flows into the lake through surface runoff, with hydrochemistry primarily controlled by carbonate dissolution. Groundwater at some locations exceeded drinking water standards in terms of ionic concentrations, highlighting the need for mitigation of groundwater pollution from animal feces and sewage in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

Assessment of hydrogeochemical characteristics and saltwater intrusion in selected coastal aquifers of southwestern India

Vignesh Akshitha et al.

Summary: The study assessed the saltwater intrusion and hydrogeochemical processes in coastal aquifers of southwestern India, identifying factors such as rock-water interaction and evaporation as mechanisms regulating groundwater chemistry. Analyzing groundwater samples and using hydrochemical diagrams, ionic ratios, and statistical analysis, the study found that various factors, including seasons, geological and anthropogenic activities, contribute to the heterogeneous chemistry of groundwater.

What drives the rapid water-level recovery of the largest lake (Qinghai Lake) of China over the past half century?

Chenyu Fan et al.

Summary: In recent years, Qinghai Lake has seen a rapid recovery in water levels, mainly due to substantial increases in key wet years. The water level changes are correlated with annual precipitation rather than temperature and evaporation. Atmospheric water vapor in the Qinghai Lake basin is primarily transported from the west and southwest to the east.

A novel LUMNAqSoP approach for prioritising groundwater monitoring stations for implementation of the Nitrates Directive

G. Ondrasek et al.

Summary: The Nitrates Directive is an EU legislation aimed at controlling nitrate pollution and protecting hydro-resources. The study in Croatia used a new approach to prioritize groundwater stations for monitoring based on agricultural loads and environmental vulnerabilities, confirming good agreement between agro-environmental loads and nitrate concentrations in water stations. The approach can be a useful tool for policy makers to establish efficient water monitoring programs and manage nitrate-vulnerable zones in diverse environmental conditions.

Rapid groundwater circulation inferred from temporal water dynamics and isotopes in an arid system

Hongbing Tan et al.

Summary: Arid basins in the alpine-cold area have unique environmental settings and special groundwater circulation systems, with unknown sources and variations of recharge processes for rivers and groundwater. The study demonstrates a mechanism for rapid circulation in the groundwater system driven by favorable hydrological conditions, providing abundant and rapidly renewable groundwater resources for future development in the Qaidam Basin.

Summary: The study focuses on the interaction between groundwater systems and water bodies with sloping surfaces, deriving an analytical solution and using a numerical algorithm to investigate the impact of water surface slope on groundwater head distribution and flux between surface water and groundwater. The results show that the water surface slope plays a dominant role in surface water-groundwater interactions.

Stable isotopes and chloride ion of precipitation events in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau, China

Cui Bu-li et al.

Summary: Stable isotopes and chloride in precipitation were sampled in the northeastern part of the Tibetan Plateau to investigate their temporal changes and reveal the moisture source of precipitation. Results showed that precipitation was the main source of chloride deposition in the NETP, with clear temperature and amount effects of stable isotopes, and precipitation mainly derived from the Westerly Circulation and East Asian Monsoon. The transition period of air mass over the NETP was related to the intensity of the East Asian Monsoon, influenced by El Nino-Southern Oscillation.

Summary: The study investigated the groundwater chemistry characteristics and controlling factors in the Huangshui River Basin in Qinghai Province, China. Major pollution factors identified were total hardness, Fe, NO3-, SO42-, and Cl-. The study also found that factors impacting groundwater chemistry included groundwater types, land use types, and human activities such as sewage and industrial discharges.
