Molecular Shape and Polar Order in Columnar Liquid Crystals

Timothy M. Swager

Summary: Bottom-up materials design using liquid crystals allows for the creation of materials with dynamic properties and directional order through cooperative interactions and the application of electric/magnetic fields. This is achieved through the thermal excitation of side chains and the anisotropic attractions between mesogenic cores in the liquid crystal state. Unconventional mesogens offer opportunities for the creation of responsive molecular assemblies with optical, electronic, or magnetic activity.

Construction of a liquid crystalline double helix supramolecular structure and its electro-responsive behaviour

Masaya Masuda et al.

Summary: By designing a chiral urea compound to construct a double helix supramolecular structure, a hexagonal columnar liquid crystal phase was formed, and the molecules self-organized into a double helix structure through intermolecular interactions. The introduction of chirality can effectively suppress thermal motion and delay polarization relaxation.

Urea Derivatives as Functional Molecules: Supramolecular Capsules, Supramolecular Polymers, Supramolecular Gels, Artificial Hosts, and Catalysts

Masashi Yokoya et al.

Summary: Urea, with its ability to both accept and donate hydrogen bonds, serves as an ideal structure for supramolecular synthesis. Recent developments have focused on various functions of urea derivatives, including the formation of discrete and continuous urea-urea intermolecular hydrogen bonds, as well as the development of catalytic reactions based on the molecular recognition ability of the ureido group.

Ferroelectric columnar assemblies from the bowl-to-bowl inversion of aromatic cores

Shunsuke Furukawa et al.

Summary: Research on organic ferroelectrics has gained significant attention, but the mechanistic insight into generating ferroelectricity in these compounds remains limited. This study demonstrates a new concept of generating ferroelectricity through a bowl-to-bowl inversion, which could have a significant impact on the field of materials science in the future.

Room-Temperature Magnetoelectric Coupling in Electronic Ferroelectric Film based on [(n-C3H7)4N][FeIIIFeII(dto)3] (dto = C2O2S2)

Xiaolin Liu et al.

Summary: The electron hopping between Fe-II and Fe-III sites induced in-plane ferroelectricity over a wide temperature range, and the magnetic Fe-II ions were found to be related to magnetoelectric coupling. The observation of magnetoelectric coupling by manipulating ferroelectric domains under an in-plane magnetic field was successfully achieved using piezoresponse force microscopy.

Electric-Field-Induced Chirality in Columnar Liquid Crystals

Alberto Concellon et al.

Summary: A novel class of tetraphenylbenzene-based discotic molecules with exceptional self-assembling properties has been described, forming J-type aggregates in solution with enhanced emission upon aggregation. These discotic molecules can exhibit a hexagonal columnar liquid crystal phase that can be switched into a helical columnar organization by applying an electric field.

Summary: The study shows that even an optically inactive compound consisting of a mixture of 21 stereoisomers can form an AP-FCLC phase and exhibit ferroelectricity due to chiral self-sorting in the columnar liquid crystal phase, where molecules with similar stereochemistry form a one-handed helical column and columns with the same helicity gather to form a chiral domain.
