The average cholesterol level in an individual increases with age. As the number of coronary artery disease (CAD) patients continues to rise, there is a growing need for clinical assessment of bad cholesterol levels. However, clinical diagnosis of cholesterol is time consuming, hence the need for a commercial solution. Sensor technology, particularly biosensors, are being developed as a promising solution for cholesterol detection. One such approach is the use of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) as reliable and efficient bioreceptors.
Average Cholesterol level in an individual keeps increasing with years. The need for clinical assessment of bad cholesterol level rises as a consequence of increasing victims in coronary artery disease (CAD). Clinical diagnosis of cholesterol is time consuming, and there is a need for commercial solution of this analysis problem. Sensor technology, which caused a revolutionary change in the field of biotechnology, is widely used in many bioanalyte detection. Developing a biosensor for cholesterol detection is being attempted utilizing plenty of routes. Biosensor can be classified based on the type of analyte recognition (bioreception) and transducers. One such promising bioreceptor is molecularly imprinted polymers as it is reliable, as well as cost and time saving. Working of a biosensor can depend on the type of bioreceptors and the type of transducer coupled to it. Electrochemical transducer is mostly deployed in cholesterol sensor for better sensitivity. Electrochemical MIPs make use of polymers with good electrical properties, and further their sensitivity can be enhanced with other modifications. This revolutionary concept is having great scope for commercialization.
