The truncate soft-shell clam, Mya truncata, as a biomonitor of municipal wastewater exposure and historical anthropogenic impacts in the Canadian Arctic

Christina M. Schaefer et al.

Summary: Municipal wastewater from a northern Canadian community, Iqa-luit, has been found to have negative impacts on the Arctic truncate soft-shell clam. Clams located closer to the wastewater treatment plant showed slower growth, lower carbon and oxygen isotope ratios, and higher concentrations of copper and lead. mRNA expression analysis also revealed changes in gene expression related to metabolism, antioxidants, detoxification, and contaminant removal. This study highlights the need to consider the effects of municipal wastewater on Arctic marine ecosystems and suggests that the Arctic clam could serve as a biomonitor for pollution in Canada's Arctic coastlines.
