Risk-based methodology to assess bridge condition based on visual inspection

Numa J. Bertola et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a risk-based methodology for evaluating bridge conditions based on visual inspection data. By integrating the degradation states of bridge elements with the consequences of element failure on global structural safety in risk analysis, the bridge condition can be accurately assessed. A case study demonstrates that this methodology enables more accurate evaluations of the impact of damage on global structural safety, leading to more objective decisions in asset management actions.

Optimal Sensor Placement for Reliable Virtual Sensing Using Modal Expansion and Information Theory

Tulay Ercan et al.

Summary: A framework for optimal sensor placement for virtual sensing is proposed based on modal expansion technique and information theory. The framework maximizes a utility function to reduce uncertainty in predicted quantities of interest at virtual sensing locations, considering uncertainties in structural model and modeling error parameters. The Gaussian nature of the response is utilized to derive analytical expressions for the utility function, highlighting the importance of robustness to errors and uncertainties.

Model-Based Interpretation of Measurements for Fatigue Evaluation of Existing Reinforced Concrete Bridges

Imane Bayane et al.

Summary: A new methodology is presented to evaluate fatigue safety of existing bridges by conducting onsite measurements and interpreting data using physics-based behavior models. The methodology combines nondestructive measurements with structural models to develop feasible models accurately describing structural behavior. This methodology is useful for evaluating nonaccessible elements of civil infrastructure and making decisions related to actions such as strengthening and retrofit.
