A critical review on the treatment of dye-containing wastewater: Ecotoxicological and health concerns of textile dyes and possible remediation approaches for environmental safety

Rania Al-Tohamy et al.

Summary: The synthetic dyes used in the textile industry cause pollution in water bodies, which has negative consequences on the environment and human health. It is important to effectively treat dye-containing wastewater using eco-friendly technologies to reduce contamination of aquatic habitats and natural water resources. This review discusses the effects of textile dyes on water bodies, aquatic flora, and human health, and compares various technologies for removing dyes from textile wastewater.

Structural Transition-Induced Raman Enhancement in Bioinspired Diphenylalanine Peptide Nanotubes

Sawsan Almohammed et al.

Summary: Semiconducting materials are proposed as alternatives to noble metal nanomaterials to enhance Raman scattering. Bioinspired semiconducting diphenylalanine peptide nanotubes annealed through a structural transition were demonstrated to support Raman detection of molecules, including mononucleotides, at concentrations as low as 10(-7) M. The enhancement is achieved by introducing electronic states below the conduction band to facilitate charge transfer to the analyte molecule. This study shows that organic semiconductor-based materials can serve as platforms for enhanced Raman scattering for chemical sensing, without the need for electromagnetic surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy.

Assessing the effects of textile leachates in fish using multiple testing methods: From gene expression to behavior

Bethanie Carney Almroth et al.

Summary: This study focused on the potential harmful effects of chemical residues leaching from different textiles on fish, indicating that textile leachate can induce cytotoxicity, mortality, and reduced locomotion in fish. These findings suggest a potential ecotoxicological threat to aquatic environments from chemical leaching of textiles.

An Experimental and Theoretical Study on the Effect of Silver Nanoparticles Concentration on the Structural, Morphological, Optical, and Electronic Properties of TiO2 Nanocrystals

Faheem Ahmed et al.

Summary: Pure and silver-loaded TiO2 nanocrystals were prepared by a soft chemical route with varying concentrations of Ag, and the influence of Ag nanoparticles on the functional properties of TiO2 was studied. Results showed that the introduction of Ag led to changes in crystalline quality, optical properties, and bandgap of TiO2, introducing new localized gap states and potentially shifting the absorption edge through visible light.
