Stress may increase choice of sooner outcomes, but not temporal discounting

Johannes Haushofer et al.

Summary: Recent research in behavioral economics shows that stress can lead individuals to prefer smaller, sooner rewards over larger, delayed ones. However, a laboratory experiment conducted with 578 participants from informal settlements in Nairobi, Kenya, reveals that stress actually increases the likelihood of choosing smaller, sooner outcomes across different domains, such as monetary gains and losses, and effortful tasks. This suggests that stress may impact intertemporal choices through mechanisms other than a simple increase in discount rates or present bias.
