Prescription profile in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection hospitalised in Aragon, Spain

Adriana Alvarez et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the prescription profile of COVID-19 infected inpatients in Aragon, Spain. The majority of patients received combination therapy with hydroxychloroquine, lopinavir/ritonavir, or azithromycin, along with other medications. However, there was insufficient evidence to recommend these treatments, and ongoing clinical trials are being conducted to determine the best treatment for SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Nikolina Bogdanic et al.

Summary: The analysis of azithromycin consumption in Croatia from 2017 to 2020 showed an increasing trend, indicating potential overuse of azithromycin. During the COVID-19 epidemic, there was a significant increase in azithromycin distribution in both hospital and non-hospital pharmacies, likely influenced by the desire to offer and try available treatments even in the absence of strong scientific evidence.

ISTH guidelines for antithrombotic treatment in COVID-19

Sam Schulman et al.

Summary: Antithrombotic agents, particularly heparins, are recommended for patients with COVID-19 to reduce thromboembolism risk. The optimal dosing and timing of these treatments, as well as the benefits of other antithrombotic agents, are still unclear. A panel of experts developed 12 recommendations based on high- to moderate-quality evidence, including the use of prophylactic or therapeutic dose heparin for different patient groups. Additional weak recommendations were made for the use of sulodexide, adding antiplatelet agents, and prophylactic rivaroxaban in select patients. Future updates will incorporate new evidence and may modify these recommendations.

Summary: Elevated CRP levels at initial hospital presentation in COVID-19 patients are associated with an increased risk of venous thromboembolism, acute kidney injury, critical illness, and mortality. There is a dose-response relationship between CRP concentration and adverse outcomes, with patients with high levels of both CRP and D-dimer showing the greatest risk of adverse outcomes. Systemic inflammation, as measured by CRP, plays a significant role in predicting clinical outcomes in COVID-19.
