Siblings in lockdown: International evidence for birth order effects on child adjustment in the Covid19 pandemic

Summary: Supportive family relationships can help mitigate the negative impact of the Covid19 pandemic on young children's adjustment. This international study focused on the buffering effect of older siblings on child mental health and found that child adjustment problems were generally elevated during the pandemic, except in Sweden where mass school closures were not enforced. Children with one or more older siblings showed fewer adjustment problems compared to those without siblings. Child adjustment problems were also found to be more prevalent in lone-parent households and in families with increased sibling conflict.

The impact of the parental division of paid labour on depressive symptoms - the moderating role of social policies

Summary: This study investigates the association between the parental division of paid labour and depressive symptoms, and finds that dual-earner couples report fewer depressive symptoms compared to parents in other types of families. The relative advantage of dual-earner couples varies across countries with different social policies, with larger benefits in countries with easily available childcare services and generous financial support from the state. Additional analyses reveal gender differences in these relationships.

Prevalence and course of anxiety disorders and symptoms from preschool to adolescence: a 6-wave community study

Summary: Anxiety disorders in childhood have a certain prevalence, with specific phobia being the most common disorder in early childhood, and generalized anxiety disorder increasing in adolescence to become the most common anxiety disorder. Anxiety symptoms often show homotypic continuity in middle childhood or adolescence. Increased specific phobia symptoms in early childhood are linked to increased symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder in middle childhood, and separation anxiety in middle childhood predicts increased symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder in adolescence.

Associations Between Movement Behaviors and Emotional Changes in Toddlers and Preschoolers During Early Stages of the COVID-19 Pandemic in Chile

Summary: Limited evidence exists on emotional and behavioral responses in toddlers and preschoolers during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in Chile. The findings suggest that the pandemic significantly affected the emotions and behaviors of young children in Chile, with factors such as changes in movement behaviors, child age, caregivers' age and stress, and residential area consistently associated with emotional changes. Supportive actions for caregivers may have a positive impact on both adults and children, and mental health promotion programs should consider multilevel approaches focusing on movement behaviors and caregiver support.
