Understanding changes in eating behavior during the transition to university from a self-determination theory perspective: a systematic review

Myles A. Maillet et al.

Summary: During the transition to university, there are changes in eating behavior such as reduced food intake, unhealthy eating, and irregular eating among students. These changes are more prominent among students who move into university residence or off-campus housing, while there are fewer changes among students who continue living at home. However, incoming students with food skills and experience living independently are less likely to experience these changes. The satisfaction of psychological needs among students may explain the observed changes in habits, self-regulation, and motivation.
