Gnomoniopsis castaneae: An emerging plant pathogen and global threat to chestnut systems

Emily Dobry et al.

Summary: Gnomoniopsis castaneae, initially identified as the primary agent of nut rot in Europe and Oceania, is an important and destructive pathogen of Castanea species. It has been found to be a mild pathogen or endophyte in multiple other hardwood species, but their roles as potential reservoirs and hosts have not been explored. The pathogen's expansion in new regions suggests some degree of introduction, and its recent discovery in the United States highlights the urgency to understand its full range, epidemiology, and methods of detection and mitigation.

Detoxication of Citrinin with Kojic Acid by the Formation of the Citrinin-Kojic Acid Adduct, and the Enhancement of Kojic Acid Production by Citrinin via Oxidative Stress in Aspergillus parasiticus

Masayuki Ichinomiya et al.

Summary: Our previous work showed that citrinin inhibited the production of aflatoxin by Aspergillus parasiticus. We found that citrinin could be converted to a novel CTN-KA adduct with kojic acid. Unlike citrinin, the CTN-KA adduct did not show antimicrobial or cytotoxic effects, indicating that citrinin was detoxified by kojic acid. We also observed that kojic acid protected fungal growth from citrinin's toxicity and enhanced its production.

In vitro cosmeceutical activity of alcoholic extract from chestnut inner shell fermented with Aspergillus sojae

Nuntinee Ritthibut et al.

Summary: The fermentation process using Aspergillus sojae significantly enhanced the cosmeceutical activity and antioxidant activity of chestnut inner shells. Ethanol extract exhibited the highest activities among different extracts, with DPPH radical scavenging activity of 80.53%, tyrosinase inhibition activity of 101.01%, and elastase inhibition activity of 76.73%. The major bioactive components in the alcoholic extract were identified as kojic acid, gallic acid, ellagic acid, and coumaric acid.

Antifungal Mechanism and Efficacy of Kojic Acid for the Control of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum in Soybean

Gui-Yang Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, the antifungal activity of kojic acid (KA) against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, the causative agent of Sclerotinia stem rot in soybean, was investigated. KA showed strong antifungal activity by inhibiting chitin and melanin syntheses, as well as sclerotia formation. The antifungal activity of KA was not significantly affected by pH, but was reduced in the presence of metal ions. Preventive applications of KA completely inhibited S. sclerotiorum symptoms in soybean, while combination with prochloraz and carbendazim improved the efficacy of commercial fungicides.

Fungicide control of Gnomoniopsis smithogilvyi, causal agent of chestnut rot in Australia

Matias Silva-Campos et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of various fungicides against G. smithogilvyi and selected the most effective products for field trials. The results showed that a combination of two active ingredients was more effective in controlling nut infection compared to single applications. This research is significant for the control of chestnut rot.

Biological activities and safety data of kojic acid and its derivatives: A review

Julia Capp Zilles et al.

Summary: Kojic acid and its derivatives present a variety of applications for human use, including depigmentation, antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, radioprotective, anticonvulsant, and obesity management activities. The depigmentation activity is attributed to their binding to tyrosinase active site, regulation of melanogenesis factors, leucocytes modulation, and free radical scavenging. They also exhibit cytotoxicity to certain cancer cell lines. In terms of safety, they are considered safe for human use at tested concentrations. Kojic acid and its derivatives hold great potential for cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and medical applications.

Impact of Cultivar, Processing and Storage on the Mycobiota of European Chestnut Fruits

Paula Rodrigues et al.

Summary: This study investigated the fungal infection in three chestnut varieties during storage and processing, and identified the major rot-causing fungi. The results showed that the Martainha variety was the least susceptible to fungal growth, while the Longal variety was the most susceptible. A diverse range of fungi were detected and identified, and sterilization with hydrothermal bath proved effective in reducing rot-causing fungi.

Use of Phosphonate Salts to Control Chestnut 'Brown Rot' by Gnomoniopsis castaneae in Fruit Orchards of Castanea sativa

Giorgia Bastianelli et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of environmentally friendly products in chestnut orchards in Central Italy. The results showed that zinc-phosphonate, as well as the fungicide tebuconazole, were effective in reducing the impact of brown rot. The best results were achieved when these treatments were applied at the blooming time.

Summary: This research investigated the potential of new local strains of endophytic bacteria (Bacillus amyloliquefaciens and B. velezensis) and their production of antimicrobial metabolites associated with Alternaria sp. The results showed that these endophytic bacteria have a good effect on controlling pepper diseases and can reduce the use of chemical pesticides.

Metabolites derived from fungi and bacteria suppress in vitro growth of Gnomoniopsis smithogilvyi, a major threat to the global chestnut industry

Matias Silva-Campos et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the antifungal potential of biological control agents (BCAs) and their secreted metabolites against G. smithogilvyi. The results showed that BCAs significantly suppressed the pathogen's growth through the production of volatile and non-volatile compounds. Metabolomics analysis also revealed the presence of antifungal compounds in the BCAs. These findings suggest that BCAs could be an ecological alternative for managing chestnut rot, but further field studies are needed to assess their effectiveness.

Tebuconazole induces liver injury coupled with ROS-mediated hepatic metabolism disorder

Tingting Ku et al.

Summary: The study found that low doses of tebuconazole mainly accumulated in the liver of mice, causing histopathological damage. Tebuconazole significantly dysregulated metabolizing enzymes, efflux transporters, and fatty acid metabolism-related genes in the liver, leading to liver hypertrophy and steatosis. Furthermore, excessive induction of ROS and oxidative stress partly accounted for the metabolic abnormalities mediated by tebuconazole.
