Digital mapping of soil pH and carbonates at the European scale using environmental variables and machine learning

Qikai Lu et al.

Summary: Soil pH and carbonates are important indicators of soil chemistry and fertility. This research mapped their spatial distribution in Europe using multi-source environmental variables and machine learning approaches. The results show the importance of MODIS products and climatic variables in predicting soil pH and CaCO3.

Digital soil mapping of Italy to map derived soil profiles with neural networks

Maria Fantappie et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been a growing demand for digital soil mapping (DSM) products due to their precise results, replicability, and ability to analyze uncertainty. This study aimed to map the probability distribution of the derived soil profiles (DSPs) of soil typological units (STUs). The mapping of the STUs was done using a neural network trained on georeferenced soil profiles from the Italian national soil database, and the resulting DSPs were validated against a test set. The proposed approach produced accurate and harmonized soil type maps, providing valuable information for soil management and further surveys.

Biophysicochemical properties of the eroded southern chernozem (Trans-Ural Steppe, Russia) with emphasis on the 13C NMR spectroscopy of humic acids

Azamat Suleymanov et al.

Summary: This study examined the morphological, water-physical, and chemical properties of the southern chernozem and erosional sediment in the Trans-Ural steppe zone of the Republic of Bashkortostan, Russia. The results showed that the surface soil had better structure and water aggregate stability compared to the sediment due to erosion. The sediments contained more silt and clay fractions, indicating a potential for carbon saturation but limited by degradation. The slope soil had slight salinity with sulfate salinization, while the sediment had higher content of exchangeable cations and water-soluble salts.

Comparative Assessment of Digital and Conventional Soil Mapping: A Case Study of the Southern Cis-Ural Region, Russia

Nikolai Lozbenev et al.

Summary: Digital mapping was utilized in the Southern Cis-Ural region near Ufa city, Russia to create a digital soil map (DSM) and compare it to a conventional soil map (CSM). Significant differences were found in the position, areas, and boundaries of certain soil types when comparing the DSM and CSM. The digital approach was more effective for estimating smaller soil areas and their boundaries, particularly on elevated topography elements and upper links of the erosion network, while the conventional approach was more appropriate for mapping fluvial soils.

Climate change impacts on soil salinity in agricultural areas

Dennis L. Corwin

Summary: Changes in climate patterns are negatively impacting agriculture, especially in arid regions. Proximal/remote sensors are useful in assessing the impact of climate change on soil salinity across scales. Factors such as salt-water intrusion, shallow water tables, and degraded water reuse will lead to increased soil salinity. There is a need for infrastructure and protocols to monitor soil salinity across multiple scales.

Estimating soil organic carbon stock change at multiple scales using machine learning and multivariate geostatistics

Gabor Szatmari et al.

Summary: This study used geostatistical methods and machine learning to predict SOC stock change in Hungary at different scales and quantified the associated uncertainties. Results showed that predictions and uncertainties of average SOC stock change were smaller for larger spatial supports, and spatial aggregation facilitated obtaining statistically significant SOC stock changes.

Assessing agricultural salt-affected land using digital soil mapping and hybridized random forests

Kamal Nabiollahi et al.

Summary: In a study conducted in Kurdistan Province, Iran, a combination of random forests and covariate data was used to assess the spatial variability of salinity and sodicity in agricultural salt-affected land. The results showed that optimization algorithms helped improve the accuracy of predictions, and identified groundwater table, categorical maps, salinity index, and multi-resolution ridge top flatness as important covariates for predicting soil salinity and sodicity.

Irrigation Induced Salinity and Sodicity Hazards on Soil and Groundwater: An Overview of Its Causes, Impacts and Mitigation Strategies

Aadhityaa Mohanavelu et al.

Summary: Salinity and sodicity have been significant environmental hazards over the past century, affecting over a quarter of the world's land and causing adverse effects on agriculture and ecosystems. Despite various remediation techniques, comprehensive land reclamation remains challenging, with growing salt-resistant crops and improving drainage being the most practical solutions to mitigate the risks of salinity and sodicity.
