Specific Binding of the α-Component of the Lantibiotic Lichenicidin to the Peptidoglycan Precursor Lipid II Predetermines Its Antimicrobial Activity

Irina S. Panina et al.

Summary: To date, several lantibiotics have been found to target lipid II, a peptidoglycan precursor in bacterial cytoplasmic membrane. The alpha-component of lichenicidin, a two-component lantibiotic, contains potential lipid II binding sites. NMR spectroscopy and MD simulations provided evidence that the C-terminal domain of lichenicidin interacts with lipid II. The contact area of lipid II includes pyrophosphate, disaccharide residues, and bactoprenol's first isoprene units.

Assessing the Mycotoxin-related Health Impact of Shifting from Meat-based Diets to Soy-based Meat Analogues in a Model Scenario Based on Italian Consumption Data

Octavian Augustin Mihalache et al.

Summary: This study assesses the risk of mycotoxin exposure when replacing meat with plant-based analogues. The findings suggest the need for proper regulation and risk assessment of mycotoxins in plant-based meat alternatives. The study finds that while substituting meat products with soy-based imitates reduces the risk of colorectal cancer, it may increase the risk of liver and renal cancers.

Insights into the mode of action of the two-peptide lantibiotic lichenicidin

Joana C. Barbosa et al.

Summary: Lantibiotics are a promising solution to antibiotic resistance, particularly against Gram-positive bacteria like MRSA and VRE. Work on lichenicidin has shown that the interaction between the two peptides, Blia and Blip, is necessary for full activity against target bacteria. The mechanism of action involves an increase in net surface charge and observed cell surface perturbations that result in leakage of internal contents.

Prevalence of toxigenic mycobiota and mycotoxins in date palm fruits and investigation on Bacillus cereus 342-2 as biocontrol agent

Yara Abdallah et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence of moulds and their toxins in date palm fruit samples, as well as the potential use of Bacillus cereus 342-2 as a biocontrol agent against certain fungal species associated with date palms. The results showed that most date palm fruit samples were contaminated with Aspergillus and Penicillium species, except for Akhlas samples. Ochratoxin A (OTA) was found in a small percentage of date samples, but most were within the allowable limits. The volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by B. cereus were effective in inhibiting the growth of certain fungal species, with aldehyde being the major component.

Formulation of a glycolipid:lipopeptide mixture as biosurfactant-based dispersant and development of a low-cost glycolipid production process

Tipsuda Subsanguan et al.

Summary: By combining different biosurfactants, the dispersant's effectiveness can be improved to achieve a hydrophilic-lipophilic balance. The production of glycolipids using immobilized cells in a stirred tank fermenter, together with the use of food waste to reduce costs, results in cheaper dispersant formulations.

Thi Thuy Ngo et al.

Summary: This study confirmed that adding a new probiotic H57 can improve cattle's preference for feed pellets by reducing microbial spoilage, thus changing the pellets' odour. H57 was found to be effective only when stored at room temperature, decreasing the concentration of microbial volatile organic compounds and extending the shelf life of feed pellets.
