Diverse herbaceous cover crops promote vineyard arthropod diversity across different management regimes

M. Geldenhuys et al.

Summary: The study found that having dense and diverse cover crops can enhance arthropod diversity in vineyards, while other management practices and environmental factors also positively influence biodiversity. There were no significant differences in arthropod diversity between integrated and organic vineyards.

Summary: This study established critical period models for controlling late-emerging weeds, identifying the period after weed emergence before control is needed to prevent yield loss. The findings support the traditional practice of controlling weeds before crop canopy closure.

Summer sowing: A successful innovation to increase the adoption of key species of annual forage legumes for agriculture in Mediterranean and temperate environments

Brad J. Nutt et al.

Summary: Summer sowing is an innovative method to increase the adoption of recently domesticated species of hard seeded annual legumes in Mediterranean and temperate Agriculture. The research, conducted in Western Australia and New South Wales, showed that summer sowing can result in higher seedling density and significantly increased herbage production compared to conventional sowing methods.

Cover Crop Introduction in a Mediterranean Maize Cropping System. Effects on Soil Variables and Yield

Nicola Silvestri et al.

Summary: Introducing cover crops (CCs) was found to significantly reduce soil nitrate and water content, increase residual nitrogen and carbon inputs in the soil, and have varying effects on crop yields. However, the benefits of CCs in Mediterranean maize cropping systems are limited by excessive input use, necessitating a comprehensive evaluation of all relevant effects to assess their suitability.

Decomposing cover crops modify root-associated microbiome composition and disease tolerance of cash crop seedlings

Xiaojiao Liu et al.

Summary: The assembly of root-associated microbes during the seedling stage is strongly influenced by crop species identity and the composition of potential root-colonizing microbes in the soil. Soil management practices, such as incorporating residues of cover crops, can modify the microbial communities. Cover crop elemental composition has a stronger effect on root-associated microbial composition than the specific cover crop species, demonstrating the need for tailored cover crop amendments for optimal functioning of root microbiomes in different cash crops.

The Impact of Ensiling at Different Moisture Contents on Germinability and Viability of Selected Weed Species' Seeds

John W. Piltz et al.

Summary: Weeds are becoming an increasingly significant issue in global agricultural production. Ensiling forage has been shown to effectively kill weed seeds and reduce their germination rates. Ensiling could be a valuable component of an integrated weed management program with significant implications for agricultural production.
