Revisiting the Relationship Between Urbanization and Economic Development in China Since the Reform and Opening-up

Liang Longwu et al.

Summary: This study calculates the contribution rate of China's urbanization to economic development and explores the causal relationship between urbanization and economic development by using the panel data cointegration test method. The results show that the contribution rate of urbanization to economic growth has a overall growth trend but with relatively low growth rate since 2012. Economic development is a significant factor in advancing urbanization and urbanization has a positive feedback effect on economic development. However, the impact of urbanization on economic development is relatively small and stable. The low level of coordination between urbanization and economic development has led to a downward trend in the contribution of new-type, people-oriented urbanization to economic growth in recent years. It is important for China to promote the coordinated development of urbanization and economy from low level to high level.

The Impact of the Accessibility of Transportation Infrastructure on the Non-Farm Employment Choices of Rural Laborers: Empirical Analysis Based on China's Micro Data

Qiuyi Huang et al.

Summary: This paper empirically analyzes the impact of the accessibility of rural transportation infrastructure on the non-agricultural employment choices of rural laborers using the micro data of the China Labor-Dynamics Survey. The results show that there is a significant positive correlation between the accessibility of rural transportation infrastructure and the non-agricultural employment of rural laborers. Further analysis reveals that gender, the family dependency ratio, and rural terrain characteristics affect the choices made by laborers with respect to non-agricultural employment. The development of rural transportation infrastructure and the promotion of rural non-agricultural industries can help alleviate poverty and improve women's employment in rural areas.
