Molecular Mechanisms Underlying the Pain-Relieving Effects of Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy: A Focus on Fascia Nociceptors

Larisa Ryskalin et al.

Summary: Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) has emerged as an alternative non-invasive treatment for musculoskeletal disorders, particularly myofascial pain syndrome (MPS). MPS, a common chronic painful condition, can be effectively treated with ESWT, which induces long-lasting analgesia.

A systematic review on extracorporeal shock wave therapy and botulinum toxin for spasticity treatment: a comparison on efficacy

Emanuela E. Mihai et al.

Summary: This systematic review evaluates and compares the effectiveness of extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) with botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) in reducing spasticity in children and adults. The review includes five studies and the results indicate that both ESWT and BoNT-A have a beneficial effect on spasticity in post-stroke, multiple sclerosis, and cerebral palsy patients. However, further research and more suitable study protocols are needed to strengthen the evidence.

Effectiveness of Botulinum Toxin A Injection in Managing Mobility-Related Outcomes in Adult Patients With Cerebral Palsy Systematic Review

Nalinda D. Andraweera et al.

Summary: This systematic review assessed the use of BTX-A in the management of mobility-related outcomes among adult persons with spastic CP. Results showed effectiveness in improving spasticity-related outcomes, but mixed results for functional outcomes were found. More studies with exclusive CP cohorts and long-term follow-up are needed for better evaluation of BTX-A effectiveness.

Intermittent serial casting for wrist flexion deformity in children with spastic cerebral palsy: a randomized controlled trial

Nigar Dursun et al.

Summary: The study assessed the efficacy of intermittent serial casting in children with cerebral palsy presenting spastic wrist flexion deformity, showing that the casting group had significant improvement in spasticity and range of motion compared to the control group. Serial casting may provide additional benefits for children with wrist flexion deformity in conjunction with BoNT-A injections and occupational therapy.

Effectiveness of Shock Wave Therapy as a Treatment for Spasticity: A Systematic Review

Isabel Maria Martinez et al.

Summary: The study suggests that shock wave therapy may effectively reduce spasticity levels, irrespective of the age and injury type of participants. However, due to the heterogeneity of treatment protocols, there is no optimal application protocol identified. Further high-quality scientific evidence is needed through primary studies.

Heakyung Kim et al.

Summary: The effectiveness and safety of BoNT-A for managing lower limb spasticity in children with CP is uncertain, with better quality evidence available from studies of placebo/sham than non-placebo controls. Further studies are needed to improve methodological quality and increase sample sizes.
