Social determinants of health and obesity: Findings from a national study of US adults

Zulqarnain Javed et al.

Summary: This study examined the association between the burden of social determinants of health (SDOH) and overweight/obesity in a representative sample of adults in the United States. The results showed that there was a graded increase in obesity prevalence with increasing SDOH burden. Middle-aged and non-Hispanic Black adults had higher rates of overweight and obesity, and there were also differences by sex. The study suggested that higher SDOH burden was associated with increased odds of obesity, independent of clinical and demographic factors.

Perspectives of Black/African American and Hispanic Parents and Children Living in Under-Resourced Communities Regarding Factors That Influence Food Choices and Decisions: A Qualitative Investigation

Debbe Thompson et al.

Summary: This study delves into the factors influencing food choices and decisions of families living in under-resourced communities through a mixed methods approach, revealing influences from personal, family, social, and environmental aspects on both parents and children. The socio-ecological model provided a useful framework for analyzing these factors and may enhance the effectiveness of interventions in improving diet and reducing obesity risk in such families.

APPLYING A RACE(ISM)-CONSCIOUS ADAPTATION OF THE CFIR FRAMEWORK TO UNDERSTAND IMPLEMENTATION OF A SCHOOL-BASED EQUITY-ORIENTED INTERVENTION

Michele Allen et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the significant impact of structural racism on intervention implementation and uptake within a trial designed to enhance student-school connectedness. By adapting the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research to a race-conscious frame, findings include the cascading influence of leaders' examination of BIPOC student and parent experiences, the complex relationship between principals' race/ethnicity and intervention engagement, the facilitative role of external change agents from BIPOC communities, and the racialized perceptions of highly networked implementation champions in enhancing intervention uptake.
