Segmental cardiac strain assessment by two-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography in surviving MIS-c patients: Correlations with myocardial flow reserve (MFR) by 13 N-ammonia PET-CT

Gabriela Nunes Leal et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the cardiac health of six surviving MIS-c patients and found subclinical impairment of myocardial microcirculation. The assessment of cardiac strain using 2DST showed good correlation with MFR derived from 13N-ammonia PET-CT.

Summary: This study investigated the perceptions and acceptability of a home-based exercise intervention in adolescent patients with JSLE and JIA during the COVID-19 pandemic, and explored the effects of the intervention on HRQoL, sleep quality, and mental health conditions. The results showed that the intervention was well-accepted and led to improvements in perceived HRQoL and fatigue in the patients. However, quantitative analyses did not capture these benefits.

Cardiac manifestations in SARS-CoV-2-associated multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children: a comprehensive review and proposed clinical approach

Francesca Sperotto et al.

Summary: Initial reports indicated that children were less affected by severe COVID-19 symptoms, but clusters of pediatric cases with severe systemic hyperinflammation and shock linked to COVID-19 have emerged since mid-April 2020. This condition, defined as SARS-CoV-2-associated multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, shares similarities with Kawasaki disease. Patients often present with persistent fever, gastrointestinal symptoms, rash, conjunctivitis, and mucosal changes, along with elevated inflammatory markers and cytokine storm. Management involves cardiac support, immunomodulation, and anticoagulation during the acute phase, with long-term follow-up crucial due to uncertain prognosis and potential cardiac complications.

Changes in Eating Habits and Sedentary Behavior During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Adolescents With Chronic Conditions

Bruna Caruso Mazzolani et al.

Summary: This study found that adolescents with chronic conditions and healthy peers experienced significant changes in lifestyle during the pandemic, such as increased frequency of cooking and eating in front of television among both groups. Additionally, a high percentage of adolescents in both groups reported increased screen time during the pandemic. No major differences were observed between patients with chronic conditions and healthy peers in terms of lifestyle changes.

Summary: The study revealed that left ventricular function evaluated by cardiac MRI typically remained stable during vasodilator stress in patients with suspected coronary artery disease, but LV dysfunction may occur in some patients with severe CAD.

Coronary microvascular dysfunction pathophysiology in COVID-19

Jie Yin et al.

Summary: This review examines the role of coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) in COVID-19 progression, highlighting the potential mechanisms such as systemic inflammation, thrombotic state induced by hyper-inflammation, and oxidative stress caused by hypoxia. The findings suggest a close association between COVID-19 and CMD, which may result in cardiovascular symptoms through various interacting mechanisms.

Summary: Physical activity and exercise are safe and beneficial for children and adolescents affected by cancer, but they often lack sufficient physical activity. The international Pediatric Oncology Exercise Guidelines (iPOEG) have been developed to promote physical activity among this population, with four guideline and five recommendation statements emphasizing the importance of movement for all children and adolescents affected by cancer.

Thais T. Fink et al.

Summary: The study found that pediatric patients with COVID-19 still had persistent symptoms during follow-up, and their quality of life was affected, especially in physical and school domains. Compared to the control group, pediatric patients with COVID-19 had significantly lower physical and school scores in the longitudinal follow-up visit.

Summary: The study found that self-reported increases in screen time and intrafamilial violence report were independently associated with poor sleep quality in both healthy adolescents and those with chronic conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic. A decreased health-related quality of life was observed in adolescents with poor sleep quality.
