Phase Equilibria Studies in the CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 System with Al2O3/SiO2 Weight Ratio of 0.4

Jinfa Liao et al.

Summary: With complex raw materials for ironmaking, accurate phase equilibrium information on the slag is crucial for refining blast furnace operation and reducing energy cost and CO2 emissions. The effect of flux additions on slag phase equilibrium can be described by a pseudo-ternary system CaO-MgO-(Al2O3+SiO2) with a fixed Al2O3/SiO2 ratio of 0.4. Experimental techniques have been used to determine liquidus temperatures and solid solutions in the CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 system, and major primary phases have been identified. These findings contribute to the construction of pseudo-binary phase diagrams and the development of a thermodynamic database.

Proposition of a Thermogravimetric Method to Measure the Ferrous Iron Content in Metallurgical-Grade Chromite

Marcus Sommerfeld et al.

Summary: The oxidation state of iron in minerals is crucial for analysis and has a significant impact on metallurgical processes. This article proposes a relatively simple and fast thermogravimetric method to determine the oxidation state, using a detailed analyzed chromite sample from Turkey. Various analysis techniques, including Mossbauer spectroscopy, are used to compare and validate the results. The proposed method shows a high correlation with the reference measurement and provides valuable insights into the oxidation state of iron in minerals.

Replacing Fossil Carbon in the Production of Ferroalloys with a Focus on Bio-Based Carbon: A Review

Marcus Sommerfeld et al.

Summary: This article reviews the research on utilizing bio-based carbon for processing ferroalloys and alloys, exploring the feasibility of hydrogen as a substitute for fossil carbon to reduce CO2 emissions. Studies have shown that bio-based carbon can be used in submerged arc furnace processes, potentially reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
