Versatile full-colour nanopainting enabled by a pixelated plasmonic metasurface

Maowen Song et al.

Summary: The development of modern digital displays and colour printing has driven the rapid advancement of colouration technologies. Metasurface-based structural colouration shows high colour saturation, wide gamut palette, chiaroscuro presentation and polarization tunability. However, previous approaches cannot simultaneously achieve all these features. In this study, we demonstrate a surface-relief plasmonic metasurface that allows independent control of colour hue, saturation and brightness through variations in the geometric dimensions and orientation of shallow nanoapertures. Microscale artworks with photorealistic and stereoscopic impressions are fabricated using a reusable template-stripping technique. Furthermore, different combinations of incident and reflected polarized light can decode kaleidoscopic information states.

All-optical controlled-NOT logic gate achieving directional asymmetric transmission based on metasurface doublet

Yijia Huang et al.

Summary: Optical logic gates are essential for next-generation optical computing technology, but the contradiction between compactness and robustness has posed challenges in this field. In this study, we propose a simple design principle based on metasurface doublets to achieve multiple-input-output states according to incident circular polarization and direction, enabling controlled-NOT logic gates in the infrared region. A spin-dependent Janus metasurface is designed and verified experimentally, demonstrating the capture of four distinct images corresponding to different input states. The proposed metasurface doublet holds potential applications in chiral imaging, chiroptical spectroscopy, and optical computing.

Sajjad Abdollahramezani et al.

Summary: This study introduces a reconfigurable hybrid metasurface platform by incorporating the phase-change material Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) into metal-dielectric meta-atoms for active and nonvolatile tuning of properties of light. The reduced-dimension meta-atom can selectively control the hybrid plasmonic-photonic resonances of the metasurface via the dynamic change of optical constants of GST, demonstrating promising applications in high-contrast optical switching and efficient beam deflection. Findings suggest dynamic hybrid metasurfaces as compelling candidates for next-generation reprogrammable meta-optics.
