Influence of Loading Rate on the Failure Characteristics of Composite Coal-Rock Specimens Under Quasi-static Loading Conditions

Zhiguo Lu et al.

Summary: The study found that the mechanical behavior becomes less sensitive to heterogeneity as the loading rate increases. Higher loading rates result in less localized failure in the pre-peak stage, smoother axial stress-axial strain curves before peak stress, and greater uniaxial compressive strength and Young's modulus. Additionally, higher loading rates lead to more brittle post-peak behavior and more severe damage to coal samples at the final loading stage. The sandstone sample exhibits deformation rebounding in the post-peak stage, contributing to the energy transition from strain energy stored in the sandstone to cracking energy of the coal sample during coal failure. Higher loading rates also result in greater rebounding speed of the sandstone, causing more severe damage to the coal sample.
