Mechanical damage mechanism of frozen coal subjected to liquid nitrogen freezing

Lei Qin et al.

Summary: Cracking low-permeability coal seams with anhydrous liquid nitrogen can enhance coalbed methane extraction efficiency, but freezing variables significantly affect the mechanical properties of coal, with an increase in freezing cycles leading to a decrease in mechanical strength.

Experimental study on mechanical properties, acoustic emission characteristics and energy evolution of coal samples after freezing with liquid nitrogen

Yapei Chu et al.

Summary: The use of liquid nitrogen fracturing technology in the petroleum/energy industry has gained interest due to its limited water consumption and non-pollution compared to conventional hydraulic fracturing. This study investigates the effects of LN2 freezing and freeze-thaw on coal samples by analyzing their mechanical properties and acoustic emission characteristics. The results show that LN2 freezing and freeze-thaw can damage the coal samples' structure, decrease their P-wave velocity and uniaxial compressive strength, and reduce acoustic emission events and energy.

Experimental Study on Temperature Response of Different Ranks of Coal to Liquid Nitrogen Soaking

Shumin Liu et al.

Summary: The temperature curves of coal samples under liquid nitrogen soaking can be divided into accelerated cooling stage, decelerated cooling stage, and maintained low-temperature stage. With an increase in soaking times, the time required to reach the low-temperature stage gradually shortens. The heating/cooling speed follows a logarithmic function, and the order of absolute values is lignite > bituminite > anthracite.

Evolution of pore and fracture of coal under heating-freezing effects: An experimental study

Ning Liu et al.

Summary: The injection of liquid nitrogen increases the pore volume of coal, causing the surface of the coal sample to become rough. The development of pores and fractures is attributed to the low-temperature fracturing characteristics of liquid nitrogen and volume expansion caused by freezing of pore water.

Characteristics Evolution of Multiscale Structures in Deep Coal under Liquid Nitrogen Freeze-Thaw Cycles

Yingfeng Sun et al.

Summary: The liquid nitrogen freeze-thaw cycle has a positive impact on the multiscale structure evolution of coal samples, improving the connectivity between mesopores and macropores and promoting the formation and expansion of microscopic fractures. The initial NMR porosity of deep coal is lower than that of shallow coal, but both increase with the number of freeze-thaw cycles, with a lower growth rate for deep samples.

Methane adsorption thermodynamics of coal sample subjected to liquid nitrogen freezing?thawing process

Hai-fei Lin et al.

Summary: The study investigated the characteristics and thermodynamic parameters of methane adsorption in coal sample under liquid nitrogen freezing-thawing conditions. The freezing-thawing cycles were found to positively correlate with methane adsorption amounts and thermodynamic parameters, with an observed enhancement of spontaneity and heat-transfer effect in the adsorption process. The freezing-thawing of LN2 was also effective in changing the pore structure of the coal sample surface, leading to improved efficiency in coal bed methane drainage technology.

Summary: By conducting direct tensile tests on coal samples obtained at different depths, it was found that the tensile strength of coal decreases with increasing depth. Additionally, the trend of acoustic emission cumulative ring-down counts and cumulative energy measured during the tests also varied accordingly.
