Prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorders in Adult Outpatient Psychiatry

Johan Nyrenius et al.

Summary: There is limited research on the prevalence of autism in adults with psychiatric disorders. A study conducted in Sweden screened and assessed patients in an adult psychiatric outpatient clinic and found that at least 18.9% of the assessed population were diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, with an additional 5-10% exhibiting subthreshold symptoms.

Neurodevelopmental disorders and comorbidity in young adults attending a psychiatric outpatient clinic

Eberhard David et al.

Summary: Missed cases of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) within adult psychiatry services have attracted increasing attention. This study found that almost two thirds of first-time attenders at an adult psychiatry clinic met criteria for ADHD or ASD. Most of the patients with NDD had not been diagnosed in childhood. The results underscore the importance of screening for NDD in adult psychiatric services.

Using the five to fifteen-collateral informant questionnaire for retrospective assessment of childhood symptoms in adults with and without autism or ADHD

Tatja Hirvikoski et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the use of the FTF questionnaire in adults with NDD and controls, finding that adults with NDD had higher FTF-CIQ scores and could be accurately classified based on these scores. The FTF-CIQ may provide valuable information on childhood symptoms and associated difficulties in adults assessed for NDD.

Psychiatric comorbidity associated with co-occurring autism spectrum disorder and substance use disorder

Benjamin M. Isenberg et al.

Summary: This study compared the prevalence of psychiatric comorbidities in young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and substance use disorder (SUD) to those with ASD only, finding high rates of psychopathology in both groups. Conduct disorder (CD) was significantly more prevalent in the ASD + SUD group, highlighting the importance of screening for CD in individuals with ASD to mitigate the potential development of comorbid SUD. Further research is needed to determine CD as a true risk factor for SUD in the ASD population and identify other risk factors.

Age at autism spectrum disorder diagnosis: A systematic review and meta-analysis from 2012 to 2019

Maarten van't Hof et al.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis on studies published between 2012 and 2019 to determine the current average age at diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder globally. The findings showed the average age at diagnosis to be 60.48 months, with a lower average age of 43.18 months for children aged 10 or below. Various factors that may influence the age at diagnosis were reported by studies, often with conflicting or inconclusive results.

Friendship understanding in males and females on the autism spectrum and their typically developing peers

Mateusz Platos et al.

Summary: The study found that autistic individuals typically pay less attention to intimacy and unconditional responsiveness in friendship understanding compared to their typically developing peers, and provide less complex definitions of a 'friend'. Additionally, autistic males endorsed unconditional responsiveness and complexity less often than females. Participants who included cognitive-developmental aspects in their definition of a 'friend' more frequently reported having casual friends and a best friend.
