Environmental citizen science practices in the ILTER community: Remarks from a case study at global scale

Caterina Bergami et al.

Summary: In recent decades, there has been increasing interest in citizen science as a collaborative practice between scientists and citizens to generate new knowledge for science, society, and policy. Environmental and ecological sciences have been at the forefront of proposing citizen science activities and models for citizen participation in research. The International Long-Term Ecological Research network serves as a platform to explore common features of citizen science across diverse cultural and socio-ecological contexts. A survey conducted in 2020 among scientists working at ILTER sites worldwide revealed that the ILTER community showed a positive inclination towards environmentally-focused citizen science initiatives, with a range of scientific questions including biodiversity, water quality, ecosystem services, and climate change being addressed. The survey also highlighted the role of volunteers in data collection and acknowledged the need for improved data sharing and dissemination of project findings.

Deconstructing citizen science: a framework on communication and interaction using the concept of roles

Susanne Hecker et al.

Summary: The paragraph discusses how citizen science opens up the scientific knowledge production process to societal actors and the resulting changing roles for scientists and citizens. Role theory is used to create a framework that identifies the tasks, aims of communication, interaction spaces, and roles of scientists and citizens in citizen science projects, providing a structured way for further scientific reflection and practical application.

Prevalence of discourse on public engagement with science in ecology literature

Cathlyn Davis et al.

Summary: The study found that while many ecologists engage with the public, only a small minority publish articles on public engagement in ecology journals. It is recommended that ecologists actively write about their public engagement efforts, and journal editors and reviewers should be more responsive to such submissions, while also consistently using keywords related to public engagement in science articles.

Awareness, views and experiences of Citizen Science among Swedish researchers - two surveys

Pavel Bina et al.

Summary: In 2021, Sweden will launch its first national portal for citizen science to support sustainable and responsible practices with various societal stakeholders. Research findings from two surveys on attitudes and experiences of citizen science among Swedish university researchers were used to develop the portal, with researchers as a key stakeholder group. The surveys revealed that while a majority of respondents had heard about citizen science, many had not been actively involved in related initiatives, indicating a lack of widespread awareness and reluctance among researchers to engage citizens in the research process.

Assessing the biogeographical and socio-ecological representativeness of the ILTER site network

Christoph Wohner et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the challenges posed by climate and land use change, the distribution and representativeness of ILTER network sites, revealing a dense coverage in Northern temperate regions and anthropogenic zones. Significant gaps were found in economically less developed regions with less human impact, indicating the need for geographic expansion and development of the ILTER network.
