Summary: In 2014, around 50% of groundwater samples in Yinchuan Plain were heavily polluted, with the pollution levels of phreatic water and confined water in non-water source areas reaching level 5. Compared to 2004, the groundwater within standard in water source areas was heavily polluted in 2014, with three-nitrogen pollution being the most serious pollutant and organic pollution level at grade IV. The increase in concentrations of major ions in groundwater was attributed to intensive agricultural activities, such as over-fertilization and artificial irrigation, suggesting human activities as the main cause of groundwater pollution.
