Water quality assessment using phytoplankton functional groups in the middle-lower Changjiang River, China

Macrophyte-Based Assessment of Upland Rivers: Bioindicators and Biomonitors

Summary: For the first time, a macrophyte-based assessment of ecological status was related to the accumulated heavy metals and trace elements in aquatic plants. Three moss and two vascular plant species were applied as biomonitors and three streams were found to be in good ecological status with low contamination. Two sites in moderate ecological status were revealed to be heavily contaminated with trace elements.

State of the climate in the Three Gorges Region of the Yangtze River basin in 2020

Summary: In 2020, the climate in the Three Gorges Region of the Yangtze River basin was generally normal, with temperatures close to normal and fewer high-temperature days. However, precipitation was significantly higher than usual, especially in the summer, reaching the second-highest level since 1961. Rainstorm days and wind speed were also above normal. The southward movement of cold air and abundant warm water vapor from the southwest were identified as the direct causes of the excessive precipitation, while the persistently high sea surface temperature in the Indian Ocean may have played a role in the abnormal climate conditions.

Nonlinear causal analysis reveals an effective water level regulation approach for phytoplankton blooms controlling in reservoirs

It found that the water level change in the past 24 hours has the strongest causal effect on daily dynamics of phytoplankton biomass with a 2-day time lag. The rise and fall of water level both significantly impact phytoplankton blooms, with rising water level having a more substantial effect overall.

Surface Water Quality and Health Risk Assessment in Taizhou City, Zhejiang Province (China)

Variation of runoff and sediment inflows to the Three Gorges Reservoir: Impact of upstream cascade reservoirs

Summary: This study reveals the impact of upstream cascade reservoirs on the annual runoff and sediment load inflows to the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR). The results show that precipitation dominated the runoff change, while human activities were the main driving factors for sediment load reduction in the studied area. Sediment retention induced by large reservoirs in the upstream of TGR was identified as the major reason for sediment load reduction. The unprecedented situation in the upper Yangtze River Basin may have profound impacts on the morphology and ecology of TGR and the downstream Yangtze River.
