Beam Spray Thresholds in ICF-Relevant Plasmas

David Turnbull et al.

Summary: Beam spray measurements indicate thresholds that are 2 to 15 times lower than those expected based on the commonly quoted figure of merit for filamentation. In the moderate-intensity regime, the dominant mechanism is forward stimulated Brillouin scattering. Weak ion acoustic wave damping and thermal enhancement of ion acoustic waves both contribute to the low thresholds.

Specular reflections (glint) of the inner beams in a gas-filled cylindrical hohlraum

N. Lemos et al.

Summary: This article reports on the experimental measurement of specular reflection (glint) of laser beams off the hohlraum wall in inertial confinement fusion experiments at the National Ignition Facility. The results show that the total measured glint on the inner cones of beams is less than 8 TW, which is less than 2% of incident peak power. Simulations indicate that the measured glinted laser light cannot account for the discrepancy between the simulated x-ray flux and the measurement. The inner beam glint is dominated by the lowest angle 21.5 beams within a 23.5 quad, and it is at most 30% sensitive to different quad polarization arrangements.

Mitigating parametric instabilities in plasmas by sunlight-like lasers

H. H. Ma et al.

Summary: Theoretical formulation of sunlight-like lasers with continuous broad frequency spectrum, random phase spectrum, and random polarization has been proposed. Numerical simulations show that using sunlight-like laser beams with a relative bandwidth of around 1% can effectively control the intensity threshold of stimulated Raman scattering, reducing the generation of hot electrons harmful to inertial confinement fusion. This has significant implications for the future development of laser technology.

Collective stimulated Brillouin scattering modes of two crossing laser beams with shared scattered wave

Jie Qiu et al.

Summary: This study presents an exact analytic solution for the convective gain coefficient of collective SBS modes with shared scattered waves in the overlapping laser beams. Factors such as crossing angle, polarization states, and wavelength difference between the beams significantly influence the shared light modes of SBS. Adjusting the polarization directions of the beams or tuning the wavelength difference can effectively suppress the shared light modes of SBS in ICF experiments.
