Oxidative stress in the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes and related complications: Current therapeutics strategies and future perspectives

Jasvinder Singh Bhatti et al.

Summary: Type 2 diabetes is a rapidly rising metabolic disorder characterized by insulin resistance and beta-cell dysfunction. High blood sugar levels lead to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative stress, which contribute to the development and progression of the disease. Antioxidants can neutralize ROS and maintain bodily homeostasis. However, the efficacy of antioxidant therapies in preventing diabetes is conflicting in clinical evidence.

Curcumin activates autophagy and attenuates high glucose-induced apoptosis in HUVECs through the ROS/NF-κB signaling pathway

Qi-Hui Jin et al.

Summary: This study provides evidence for the protective effect of CUR against high glucose-induced damage to HUVECs, and suggests that this effect may be mediated through promoting autophagy and inhibiting the ROS/NF-kappa B signaling pathway, thereby alleviating apoptosis.

Programmed Cell Death in Diabetic Nephropathy: A Review of Apoptosis, Autophagy, and Necroptosis

Nour S. Erekat

Summary: Diabetic nephropathy, a common complication of diabetes, involves multiple forms of cell death, including apoptosis, autophagy, and necroptosis. Apoptosis of podocytes leads to glomerular injury and proteinuria, while apoptosis of epithelial cells in the proximal tubules causes tubular atrophy and loss of renal function. Insufficiency of autophagy and necroptosis also play roles in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy.

Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) downregulate the miR-4429/PTEN axis to promote apoptosis of fibroblasts in pelvic organ prolapse

Yizhen Sima et al.

Summary: This study found that AGEs induce fibroblast apoptosis in pelvic organ prolapse (POP) by regulating the miR-4429/PTEN/PI3K/Akt pathway. This discovery reveals a novel mechanism by which AGEs contribute to the molecular pathological alteration in POP.

Human miRNAs to Identify Potential Regions of SARS-CoV-2

Nimisha Ghosh et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new approach to identify potential regions in the SARS-CoV-2 virus that are similar to human miRNAs. These regions could have similar effects on the human body as human miRNAs. The study uses sequence alignment techniques to identify these potential regions and explores their biological significance and potential for drug targeting.

Mitochondrial oxidative stress in the tumor microenvironment and cancer immunoescape: foe or friend?

Cheng-Liang Kuo et al.

Summary: Oxidative stress is characterized by an excessive level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated from vigorous metabolism and oxygen consumption. The precise balance of oxidative stress between mitochondria and other organelles is crucial for cell survival. ROS produced from mitochondria play a major role in tumorigenesis, affecting various aspects such as proliferation, migration/invasion, angiogenesis, inflammation, and immunoescape. The dynamic balance of oxidative stress not only orchestrates complex cell signaling events in cancer cells but also influences the tumor microenvironment (TME), particularly immune cells.

Fatin Farhana Jubaidi et al.

Summary: Diabetic cardiomyopathy, a major mortality risk factor among diabetic patients worldwide, is characterized by cardiac structural and functional alterations induced by hyperglycemia-initiated oxidative stress. Flavonoids, the most abundant phytochemicals in plants, have been extensively studied for their therapeutic potential in protecting the heart against diabetes-induced cardiomyopathy through their anti-hyperglycemic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic actions.
