Summary: This study reports the synthesis and structural characterization of four new phenothiazine-carboxylate salts and their use as contrast agents in fluorescent electrospun polyvinylpyrrolidone nanomaterials for latent fingerprint detection. The optical properties of the new fluorophores and nanomaterials were evaluated, showing intense and uniform fluorescence in the solid state. Scanning electron microscopy investigations revealed the nanometric size of the nanomaterials. These newly synthesized nanomaterials showed promising results in the detection and visualization of latent fingerprints on various surfaces.

Surface morphology, optical band gap and magnetic behavior of Cu(1-x)MnxFe2O4 nanofibers prepared by sol-gel electrospinning

Selective and sensitive detection of Zn(II) in solution and nanofibers using phosphorescent iridium(III) complexes

Summary: Two iridium(III) complexes [(L1)2Ir(tpip)] (Ir1) and [(L2)2Ir(tpip)] (Ir2) with tetraphenylimidodiphosphinate (tpip) ancillary ligand were developed as efficient luminescent sensors for Zn2+ detection. Both complexes exhibited broad emission bands peaking at 613 nm and 603 nm, with PLQY of 0.32 and 0.57, and lifetimes of 1.8 and 1.3 μs, respectively. They showed excellent sensitivity and selectivity towards Zn2+ with a low detection limit of around 10-7 M and fast response time in solution. Nanofibers of these complexes were fabricated for on-site detection of Zn2+ in solid-phase, showing similar colorimetric changes as in solution.

Structural, morphological, optical, and thermal properties of electrospun PbS/PVP-PEO nanofibers

Summary: This study presents the synthesis and characterization of PVP-PEO nanofibers loaded with PbS nanoparticles. SEM analysis demonstrated that smooth and homogeneous nanofibers could be obtained at 12% PVP-PEO (50:50 wt%) concentration. XRD and TEM analysis confirmed the formation of highly crystalline PbS nanoparticles in the PVP-PEO blend matrix. FTIR and TGA studies revealed the interaction between PbS nanoparticles and the polymer blend matrix. UV-Vis diffuse reflectance studies showed a blue shift in the reflectance onset compared to bulk PbS, and the optical bandgap ranged from 1.08 to 1.56 eV by varying the PbS concentration.

Emergence of Structural Phosphorescence in Free-Standing, Laterally Organized Polymer Nanofiber Membranes

Summary: In the past decade, the phosphorescence of metal-free confined polymer structures has gained attention due to their sustainability, low toxicity, and usage in sensing applications. This study presents the preparation of a free-standing array of nanofibers and compares their optical properties to films with identical composition. The nanofibers form laterally aligned membranes with a high internal order, hourglass-shaped features, and a long-lived emission in the blue region. This research is significant as it constitutes the first report of long-lived emission from solid-state poly(p-xylylenes) nanofibers, and these controlled polymer arrays have potential applications in organic sensors and optoelectronic devices.

Electrospun Nanofiber Membranes from 1,8-Naphthimide-Based Polymer/Poly(vinyl alcohol) for pH Fluorescence Sensing

Summary: Accurate and sensitive pH sensing and monitoring in the environment are crucial for human health. Nanomaterials and nanotechnology combined with fluorescent materials provide excellent opportunities for developing high-performance sensing membranes and monitoring pH effectively. In this study, fluorescent nanofiber membranes (NFMs) containing poly-1,8-naphthimide derivative-3-[dimethyl-[2-(2-methylprop-2-enoyloxy)ethyl]azaniumyl]propane-1-sulfonate (PNI-SBMA) were fabricated by electrospinning. The NFMs showed outstanding hydrophilicity due to surfactant-like functionalities in the side chains of PNI-SBMA, and the naphthimide derivatives exhibited sensitivity to pH through the photoinduced electron transfer effect, enabling efficient pH fluorescence sensing applications of the NFMs. Among the NFMs, the PNI-SBMA/PVA NFM with a ratio of 1:9 (NFM2) demonstrated high sensitivity and good cyclability to pH.

Comparative Study of Metal Substrates for Improved Carbonization of Electrospun PAN Nanofibers

Summary: Carbon nanofibers have a wide range of applications and are typically produced from poly(acrylonitrile) nanofibers. In this study, sandwiching the nanofiber mats between metal sheets was found to effectively retain their morphology during stabilization and incipient carbonization at different temperatures. Helium ion microscopy revealed that all metals eliminated nanofiber deformation, with silicone achieving the best results. Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectroscopy analysis showed that carbonization degree and crystallinity increased with temperature and depended on the substrate material.

Summary: Researchers have developed a simple, general, and efficient method to stimulate circularly polarized light (CPL) activity in achiral perovskites. By forming van der Waals heterojunctions between chiral and achiral perovskites, spin-polarized electrons from chiral perovskites are received by achiral perovskites, resulting in nonequilibrium spin distribution and CPL activity. The polarization degree of CPL in achiral perovskites is at least one order of magnitude higher than in chiral perovskites and can be flexibly designed by tuning chemical compositions, operating temperature, or excitation wavelengths.

Rare-earth-doped electrospun scheelite CaWO4 nanofibers with excitation-dependent photoluminescence and high-linearity cathodoluminescence for ratiometric UV wavelength and radiation sensors

Summary: In this study, high-aspect-ratio AWO(4) (A = Ba, Ca, Pb and Sr) nanofibers doped with Tb and Eu ions were synthesized and their performance in UV light detection was compared. The CaWO4:5Tb-5Eu nanofibers exhibited strong photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence emissions, making them a potential fluorescent probe for UV wavelength detection. However, similar results were not observed in nanofibers of other AWO(4) compounds. Additionally, the CL intensities from CaWO4:5Tb-5Eu nanofibers showed highly linear dependences on applied voltage and current, suggesting their potential use in radiation detection.

Smart fluorescence aptasensor using nanofiber functionalized with carbon quantum dot for specific detection of pathogenic bacteria in the wound

Dyeable PAN/CuS Nanofiber Membranes with Excellent Mechanical and Photothermal Conversion Properties via Electrospinning

Summary: Wearable heaters based on photothermal fibers have attracted considerable attention for personal thermal management. However, the design, dyeability, mechanical properties, and practical application of photothermal fabrics still pose significant challenges. In this study, polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/copper sulfide (CuS) nanofiber membranes were fabricated by electrospinning, demonstrating excellent photothermal conversion performance, heating cycle stability, and high tensile strength. Furthermore, the photothermal properties of the membranes were retained after the dyeing process. This work presents a robust strategy for developing photothermal and dyeable fabrics with potential applications in personal thermal management.
