Novel NIR-Phosphorescent Ir(III) Complexes: Synthesis, Characterization and Their Exploration as Lifetime-Based O2 Sensors in Living Cells

Ilya S. Kritchenkov et al.

Summary: The photophysical properties of a series of NIR-emitting iridium complexes were studied, and it was found that their characteristics are mainly determined by the properties of the metalating ligands. These complexes showed lower oxygen-quenching constants and acceptable cytotoxicity in physiological media. Additionally, they can be used for semi-quantitative measurement of oxygen concentration in living cells.

Biocompatible Ir(III) Complexes as Oxygen Sensors for Phosphorescence Lifetime Imaging

Ilya S. Kritchenkov et al.

Summary: The synthesis of biocompatible near infrared phosphorescent complexes and their application as triplet oxygen sensors in bioimaging is a challenging area in organometallic chemistry. By designing and synthesizing novel iridium complexes adorned with oligo(ethylene glycol) groups, these emitters exhibit solubility in water, biocompatibility, and shield from bio-environment interactions. These complexes have shown potential as semi-quantitative oxygen sensors in biological systems through phosphorescence lifetime imaging experiments and calibration curves.
