A Review of Magnetic Nanoparticle-Based Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Substrates for Bioanalysis: Morphology, Function and Detection Application

Hanbing Huang et al.

Summary: Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a popular non-destructive and water-free interference analytical technology that offers fast response, excellent sensitivity, and specificity to trace biotargets in biological samples. Research in the past decade has focused on magnetic nanoparticle-based SERS substrates for efficient bioanalytical methods, significantly improving selectivity and accuracy. The paper reviewed recent advances in magnetic nanoparticle-based SERS substrates for bioanalysis, including their various morphologies and functions such as separation, enrichment, recognition, and SERS tags. The typical application progress on magnetic nanoparticle-based SERS substrates for bioanalysis of various biomolecules and cells was summarized and future trends were proposed.

Autoantibodies targeting type I interferons: Prevalence, mechanisms of induction, and association with viral disease susceptibility

Benjamin G. Hale

Summary: The IFN-I system is crucial in limiting severe viral diseases in humans, and deficiencies in IFN-I are associated with life-threatening infections. Some individuals with chronic autoimmune diseases develop autoantibodies against IFN-Is, compromising their innate antiviral defenses. The prevalence of anti-IFN-I autoantibodies increases with age, affecting around 4% of individuals over 70 years old.

Summary: This study developed a drug delivery system, AFN@CM, by camouflaging arsenic trioxide-loaded magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4) with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cell membranes, which effectively induced ferroptosis in HCC cells and showed enhanced tumor suppression. The bio-safety of AFN@CM was also demonstrated and it achieved continuous tumor elimination in a mouse model.

Magnetic relaxation switching biosensor via polydopamine nanoparticle mediated click chemistry for detection of chlorpyrifos

Yongzhen Dong et al.

Summary: This study presents the integration of a polydopamine nanoparticles (PDA NPs)-Cu2+ chelate complex mediated signal conversion system and a Cu+-catalyzed click chemistry triggered magnetic signal amplification system into an MRS biosensor for the detection of chlorpyrifos. The PDA NPs possess abundant functional groups and a large surface area, enabling the absorption of a large amount of Cu2+ ions by chelation. Additionally, PDA NPs can easily be conjugated with antibodies, providing a platform for immunoassay and magnetic signal readout integration.

Interferon and interferon-stimulated genes in HBV treatment

Qirong Li et al.

Summary: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a virus that causes acute and chronic hepatitis, as well as liver cancer and cirrhosis. Interferons (IFNs) are proteins with antiviral properties and play an important role in the immune system. IFNs inhibit HBV replication and transcription by inducing the expression of IFN-stimulated genes (ISGs) in host cells.
