Integrative Metallomics Studies of Toxic Metal(loid) Substances at the Blood Plasma-Red Blood Cell-Organ/Tumor Nexus

Maryam Doroudian et al.

Summary: This article discusses the impact of environmental pollutants and the development of anticancer metallodrugs. Both areas, seemingly unrelated, are connected by our limited understanding of the entry of toxic metal substances into the human bloodstream. By studying bioinorganic chemistry and examining these processes under near-physiological conditions, a causal link can be established between chronic human exposure to toxic metal species and disease etiology, and novel anticancer metal complexes can be developed.

Nephrotoxic Biomarkers with Specific Indications for Metallic Pollutants: Implications for Environmental Health

Istvan Pocsi et al.

Summary: Environmental and occupational exposure to heavy metals and metalloids poses a significant global health risk, with the kidney being an early target for damage. The development of better biomarkers for nephrotoxicity is crucial for diagnosing, preventing, and treating heavy metal exposure.

Metallomics analysis for early assessment and individualized intervention of neurodevelopmental disorders

Hiroshi Yasuda et al.

Summary: This metallomics study on scalp hair samples of children with autistic disorders found that nearly half of the infants aged 0-3 years suffer from zinc deficiency and toxic metal burdens. The study also showed a close correlation between zinc level and zinc/iron ratio, as well as significant relationships between zinc deficiency and toxic metal burdens such as lead and aluminum. These findings suggest that infantile zinc deficiency is related to high burdens of toxic and essential metals, and that mineral imbalances play a principal role in the etiology of neurodevelopmental disorders.

Summary: Methylmercury is one of the most potent neurotoxins that humans are exposed to through consuming fish. This study investigates the role of small-molecular-weight thiols in the transport of methylmercury, particularly in the presence of placental and blood-brain barrier transporters. The results suggest that cysteine and homocysteine enhance the release of methylmercury from plasma, potentially contributing to its delivery to the brain.

Linking molecular targets of Cd in the bloodstream to organ-based adverse health effects

Alexander Hill et al.

Summary: Chronic exposure to toxic metals such as cadmium poses a global public health concern, yet the biomolecular mechanisms underlying its effects on diseases are still not fully understood. A systems toxicology-based approach is needed to explore the relationship between exposure to cadmium and resulting diseases. Further research is required to integrate the bioinorganic chemistry of cadmium in the bloodstream with its effects on target organs in order to causally link human exposure to this metal with diseases.

Summary: The study explores the adverse health effects of human exposure to environmental pollutants, using metalloentities found in blood plasma and red blood cell cytosol as potential exposure biomarkers. These biomarkers can help better understand the negative health impacts of chronic exposure to inorganic pollutants among different populations.
