Development on chemical characteristics including the bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity during maturation of jambolan (Syzygium cuminii L.) fruit

Murugan Rajan et al.

Summary: In this study, the development of bioactive compounds in different maturation periods of jambolan fruit parts was investigated. The results showed no significant variation among the samples. The 80% ethanolic extract of the ripen stage of jambolan fruit seed exhibited higher levels of glucose, fructose, total phenolics, flavonoids, gallic acid, rutin, chlorogenic acid, catechin, and epicatechin. On the other hand, the 80% ethanolic extract of jambolan fruit skin contained higher levels of citric acid and malic acid. The ethanolic extract of jambolan fruit seed demonstrated higher antioxidant capacities. Overall, this study highlights the potential of the ripen stage of jambolan fruit seed as a source of natural antioxidant compounds.

Bearing Fault Detection in Three-Phase Induction Motors Using Support Vector Machine and Fiber Bragg Grating

Beatriz Brusamarello et al.

Summary: The three-phase induction motor (TIM) is widely used due to its robustness and cost-effectiveness. However, like any other equipment, it is vulnerable to faults, with about 52% of them related to bearings. This work proposes a method using fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors to detect flaws in the outer bearing's raceway by measuring motor dynamic strain signals. A support vector machine (SVM) classifier is used for fault severity identification, with feature extraction performed using peak selection and principal component analysis (PCA). The results show that the PCA-based dataset achieved a higher hit rate than the dataset based on peak selection.

Nutritional supplementation of gallic acid ameliorates Alzheimer-type hippocampal neurodegeneration and cognitive impairment induced by aluminum chloride exposure in adult Wistar rats

B. Ogunlade et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the neuroprotective effects of Gallic Acid (GA) against aluminum-chloride induced Alzheimer's disease (AD). The results showed that GA administration restored the abnormal levels of antioxidant enzymes, serum electrolytes, and neurotransmitters. It also ameliorated spatial memory impairment and learning deficit in neurobehavioral tests. Furthermore, GA administration protected the brain tissue from neurofibrillary tangles and amyloid plaques.

Pathological mechanisms and therapeutic strategies for Alzheimer's disease

Yaojun Ju et al.

Summary: Alzheimer's disease is a complex neurodegenerative disease characterized by synaptic dysfunctions and neurotransmitter deficiencies. The pathological features of Alzheimer's disease include changes in β-amyloid and tau proteins. Aging and other factors are also risk factors for the disease. Therefore, developing treatment strategies that target different pathological factors is crucial.

Captopril is more effective than Perindopril against aluminium chloride induced amyloidogenesis and AD like pathology

Debashish Mohapatra et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of Captopril and Perindopril on cognitive dysfunction and amyloidogenesis induced by aluminium chloride were evaluated and compared. The results showed that both Captopril and Perindopril prevented and improved cognitive dysfunction, reduced amyloid-beta content, and improved antioxidant status. They also reversed the histopathological changes in the hippocampus region. Captopril was found to be more effective than Perindopril.

Combination of donepezil and gallic acid improves antioxidant status and cholinesterases activity in aluminum chloride-induced neurotoxicity in Wistar rats

Tajudeen O. Obafemi et al.

Summary: The study found that AlCl3 significantly increased cholinesterase activity and levels of MDA and NO in the brain, while decreasing total thiol levels and activities of SOD and catalase. Treatment with donepezil alone or in combination with gallic acid reversed these changes, with the combination showing superior antioxidant effects. This suggests a potential synergy between gallic acid and donepezil in combating AlCl3-induced neurotoxicity and oxidative stress.

Alterations in dopamine system and in its connectivity with serotonin in a rat model of Alzheimer's disease

Kelly Ceyzeriat et al.

Summary: The study found alterations in dopamine pathways in Alzheimer's disease, particularly in a rat model where 5-HT2A receptor blockade led to reduced dopamine release in the striatum. Additionally, functional hypersensitivity of dopamine receptors in rats was reported, independent of amyloid plaques or inflammatory marker expression. Furthermore, changes in receptor connectivity induced by a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor may offer potential therapeutic avenues for Alzheimer's disease.
