Breastfeeding and breastmilk substitute use and feeding motivations among mothers in Bandung City, Indonesia

Mackenzie Green et al.

Summary: Suboptimal breastfeeding is common in Indonesia, with only half of infants exclusive breastfed and feeding of breastmilk substitutes prevalent among infants and toddlers. Maternal employment and insufficient breastmilk production are associated with the use of breastmilk substitutes. Perceived benefits for growth, intelligence, and immunity are the most important motivators for feeding breastmilk substitutes. Despite legislation restricting some marketing, high prevalence of breastmilk substitute promotions may be influencing caregivers' feeding choices.

The impact of Baby Friendly Initiative accreditation: An overview of systematic reviews

Frankie J. Fair et al.

Summary: Despite reported benefits, breastfeeding rates are low globally, prompting the establishment of support systems like the Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) to promote healthy infant feeding practices. Reviews on the impact of BFI accreditation show some increase in breastfeeding initiation, exclusivity and duration, with evidence of decreased gastrointestinal infections and allergic dermatitis in infants. However, overall confidence in the evidence remains very low due to concerns over risk of bias and study heterogeneity. More high-quality studies are needed to better evaluate the long-term impact of full BFI accreditation on maternal and infant health outcomes.

Urban-Rural Gaps in Breastfeeding Practices: Evidence From Lao People's Democratic Republic

Jordyn T. Wallenborn et al.

Summary: The study identified significant disparities in breastfeeding practices between large-urban, small-urban, and rural residences in Lao People's Democratic Republic. Mothers in urban areas were more likely to not comply with the World Health Organization's breastfeeding recommendations compared to mothers in rural areas, with differences largely attributed to maternal education and household wealth.
