Preoperative nutritional evaluation, surgical site infection, and prognosis in patients with oral cancer

Shin-ichiro Hiraoka et al.

Summary: The study aimed to examine the association between preoperative nutritional indicators and postoperative infection risk and long-term prognosis in patients undergoing reconstruction surgery for oral cancer. The results showed that preoperative nutritional indicators were associated with infection risk and prognosis. Preoperative nutritional therapy was found to be crucial for improving therapeutic outcomes in patients requiring reconstructive surgery for oral cancer.

Relationship between Preoperative Nutritional Status and Clinical Outcomes in Patients with Head and Neck Cancer

En-Ying Wang et al.

Summary: The nutritional status of cancer patients is closely related to their survival and surgical outcomes. This study investigated the association between preoperative prognostic nutritional index (PNI) and post-operative clinical outcomes in head and neck cancer patients. The results showed that patients with a high PNI had a lower incidence of overall complications, medical complications, and pulmonary complications, but no significant difference in surgical complications. The high PNI group also had a lower risk of mortality. These findings suggest that the PNI score can serve as an independent predictor of postoperative complications in head and neck cancer patients undergoing surgical resection. Preoperative testing and evaluation of PNI may help identify patients at low PNI and high-risk for postoperative surveillance.

The prospective evaluation and risk factors of dysphagia after surgery in patients with oral cancer

Takumi Hasegawa et al.

Summary: This study investigated the swallowing ability and quality of life in head and neck cancer patients undergoing reconstructive surgery, identifying risk factors for postoperative dysphagia. Factors such as advanced T stage, bilateral neck dissection, and muscle resection were found to be associated with poor swallowing ability. Close attention should be paid to managing oral cancer patients with reconstructive surgery based on the identified risk factors.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Long-term swallowing-related outcomes in oral cancer patients receiving proactive swallowing therapy

Wen-Hsuan Tseng et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of proactive swallowing rehabilitation on swallowing function and quality of life in oral cancer patients in the first two years after definitive treatment. The results showed that proactive swallowing therapy is feasible, facilitates safe oral intake and adequate nutrition, and leads to faster and better recovery in swallowing function. Approximately 90% of participants achieved safe swallowing after six months with diet modification or compensatory maneuvers.

Nutritional status and skeletal muscle status in patients with head and neck cancer: Impact on outcomes

Merran Findlay et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively reviewed the nutritional status and body composition features of patients who completed treatment for head and neck cancer, revealing the significant impact of malnutrition on survival, treatment completion, unplanned admissions, and length of stay. Malnutrition was found to be a more powerful prognostic indicator than CT-defined skeletal muscle depletion.

Change in Nutritional Status and Dysphagia after Resection of Head and Neck Cancer

Ayumi Sadakane-Sakuramoto et al.

Summary: The preoperative nutritional status of head and neck cancer patients was found to impact their ability to swallow and ingest post-surgery, affecting their nutritional status. Patients in the high-risk group showed worse outcomes post-surgery, experiencing more severe dysphagia and poorer nutritional status for a period of time after surgery.
