Signet Ring Cell Histology Confers Worse Overall Survival in Treated Esophageal Adenocarcinoma

Andrew Tang et al.

Summary: Signet ring cell histology is associated with poor prognostic outcomes for esophageal cancer patients compared to nonsignet adenocarcinoma. Signet ring cell patients are less likely to present at early stages and more likely to experience pathologic upstaging after treatment. Age, clinical tumor and nodal stage, and chemotherapy sequence are important predictors of survival for these patients.

Esophageal adenocarcinoma with any component of signet ring cells portends poor prognosis and response to neoadjuvant therapy

Erin M. Corsini et al.

Summary: Multiple investigations have shown that patients with esophageal adenocarcinoma containing signet ring cell (SRC) histology, even with less than 50% composition, may exhibit resistance to standard multimodality therapy and have poorer long-term outcomes. Patients with any degree of SRC present on pretreatment biopsy showed worse survival compared to usual-type esophageal adenocarcinoma.

Impact of pathological tumor response after CROSS neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy followed by surgery on long-term outcome of esophageal cancer: a population-based study

Ali Al-Kaabi et al.

Summary: This nationwide study in the Netherlands investigated the association between pathological tumor response and prognosis in esophageal cancer patients. It found that a quarter of patients achieved favorable long-term survival with complete pathological response, while one-third had very poor survival with incomplete response. These findings suggest the importance of considering pathological tumor response in assessing individual prognosis and treatment decisions.

Signet Ring Cell Features are Associated with Poor Response to Neoadjuvant Treatment and Dismal Survival in Patients with High-Grade Esophageal Adenocarcinoma

Daniel Solomon et al.

Summary: The study found that most patients with locoregional esophageal adenocarcinoma have high-grade histology, which is associated with poor prognosis and limited treatment response. Among patients with G3 disease, those with signet ring cell features had lower overall survival. The benefit of neoadjuvant treatment for G3 EAC patients with signet ring cell histology appears to be limited.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Tumor regression grading after neoadjuvant treatment of esophageal and gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma: results of an international Delphi consensus survey

G. Saliba et al.

Summary: This Delphi survey aimed to establish a consensus on the most useful tumor regression grading system for histopathologic evaluation of esophageal and gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinomas. The expert panel recommended a 4-tiered TRG system for assessing the primary tumor and a 3-tiered system for grading therapeutic response in lymph nodes. This TRG grading system can be recommended as an international standard for histopathologic TRG grading in these cancers.
