Type I Social Life Cycle Assessments: Methodological Challenges in the Study of a Plant in the Context of Circular Economy

Georgios Archimidis Tsalidis

Summary: Knowing the social externalities of products is crucial for policymakers to take actions at a macro level. The Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA) method can help assess these externalities, supporting the transition to a circular economy. This study explores how S-LCA results of circular systems can be interpreted, highlighting the importance of the number of organizations involved and the need for further development of the type I approach.

Valorisation of SWRO brines in a remote island through a circular approach: Techno-economic analysis and perspectives

C. Morgante et al.

Summary: This research introduces a novel hybrid system, the Minimal Liquid Discharge (MLD) process, to capture the value of seawater reverse osmosis brines. The MLD process consists of several units, including nanofiltration, Mg reactive crystallizer, multi-effect distillation, and NaCl thermal crystallizer. The system not only provides significant economic benefits, but also produces high purity minerals and salts.

Environmental impact of desalination: A systematic review of Life Cycle Assessment

Kyungsun Lee et al.

Summary: The article discusses the global challenge of water insecurity and the increasing desalination capacity in response to this challenge. It highlights the importance of Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) in evaluating the environmental impact of desalination. The review of 38 studies with 295 LCA scenarios reveals maintenance and operation, treatment process, and the energy sector as major contributors to negative environmental impacts, with potential need for future technological interventions for sustainable desalination.

Aspects of environmental impacts of seawater desalination: Cyprus as a case study

D. Xevgenos et al.

Summary: Cyprus heavily relies on seawater desalination for drinking water supply, with reverse osmosis technology dominating the total capacity. The environmental impacts on marine ecosystems, particularly seagrass meadows, have been observed. In 2017, Cyprus produced 68.7 million cubic meters of desalinated water, resulting in 160 ktons of CO2 equivalent emissions.
