Optimal BIM and LCA integration approach for embodied environmental impact assessment

Vivian W. Y. Tam et al.

Summary: This research develops a way of selecting the optimal BIM-LCA integration approach that incorporates the needs of different scenarios. Three scenarios of environmental impact assessment are designed to demonstrate the application of the proposed way. The results indicate that using visual programming languages is the optimal BIM-LCA integration approach for assessing environmental impacts in the early and construction design stages, while using LCA plugin and visual programming languages are the optimal approaches for environmental assessment in the scenario of detailed design stages.

Integration of life cycle assessments (LCA) in circular bio-based wall panel design

Valeria Cascione et al.

Summary: Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a valuable method to assess the environmental impacts of circular bio-based buildings. The results of this study showed that a circular design and some bio-based materials may not always lead to low environmental impacts. LCA can identify the materials and components that contribute most significantly to the environmental impact of the building, guiding the redesign process to reduce carbon emissions.

Sustainability impact and effects analysis- A risk management tool for sustainable product development

Jesko Schulte et al.

Summary: Integrating a strategic sustainability perspective in product development requires decision-makers to connect socio-ecological sustainability aspects to business implications and use a risk management approach to proactively identify and manage sustainability risks. The Sustainability Impact and Effects Analysis tool presented in this study combines Failure Mode and Effects Analysis with a strategic sustainability perspective, aiming to increase decision-makers' awareness of sustainability risks and provide practical ways to manage them strategically. Testing in two companies showed its effectiveness in identifying and analyzing sustainability risks, leading to increased awareness of the interconnections between socio-ecological sustainability and business implications.

Investigating effects of group model building on sustainable design decision-making

Matilda Watz et al.

Summary: This research investigates the effects of a Group Model Building approach on the sustainability knowledge base prior to the weighting of design requirements. The results show that the approach improves the understanding of sustainability among design teams and facilitates alignment on the importance of sustainability criteria. However, it does not significantly impact the knowledge maturity of design decisions.

A. Schiessl et al.

Summary: The commitment of international governments to limit global warming to 2 degrees C has driven increased awareness and interest in sustainability, particularly regarding the ecological performances of corporations and products in limiting greenhouse gas emissions. In Germany, the industry sector accounts for almost 25% of annual GHG emissions, with 1% coming from aluminum production. Current assessment focus is on vehicle use phase, but there is a lack of site-specific CO(2)e emission data from suppliers.
