Material flow analysis and sustainability of the Italian meat industry

Vera Amicarelli et al.

Summary: The Italian meat industry is a core business for the national economy, but it faces challenges such as large amounts of energy consumption and various types of waste, particularly increasing levels of food loss and waste. The United Nations 2030 Agenda has identified food waste as a global concern, yet there is still limited research on quantifying food waste. This study applies Material Flow Analysis to assess the Italian meat industry, demonstrating its importance in sustainability evaluations.

Allocation in the LCA of meat products: is agreement possible?

Aurelie Wilfart et al.

Summary: Allocation presents a key methodological challenge in LCA, especially in the meat supply chain where conflicts of interest are prevalent. Divergent preferences for allocation rules based on meaning, compliance, stability, and practicality were identified among stakeholders. The study revealed that subjective criteria like "meaning" play a significant role in determining the choice between biophysical and economic allocation methods.
