Nachiketa Bairagi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanism of the Hik2-Rre1 two-component system in cyanobacteria, revealing the positive regulation of signaling and phosphorylation by Hik34, while the redox status of PQ does not directly influence Rre1 phosphorylation. A model for Hik2-dependent Rre1 phosphorylation was proposed based on the findings.

Characterization of a Novel Hot-Spring Cyanobacterium Leptodesmis sichuanensis sp. Nov. and Genomic Insights of Molecular Adaptations Into Its Habitat

Jie Tang et al.

Summary: The study describes several strains of filamentous cyanobacteria from different, primarily cold environments, belonging to the genus Leptodesmis. The complete genome of a novel hot-spring strain, Leptodesmis sp. PKUAC-SCTA121 (A121), isolated from Erdaoqiao hot springs in China, was sequenced. The results confirm the establishment of a new species within Leptodesmis, named Leptodesmis sichuanensis sp. nov. The study also provides the first insight into the genomic features of the genus Leptodesmis and lays the foundation for future global ecogenomic and geogenomic studies.

Polyphasic Identification and Genomic Insights of Leptothermofonsia sichuanensis gen. sp. nov., a Novel Thermophilic Cyanobacteria Within Leptolyngbyaceae

Jie Tang et al.

Summary: In this study, a thermophilic strain, PKUAC-SCTAE412, recovered from Lotus Lake hot spring in China, was characterized using polyphasic approaches. The results supported the existence of a novel genus within Leptolyngbyaceae, which was further confirmed by genomic analyses. The complete genome of this strain provided insights into its adaptation to the hot spring environment and revealed a large number of genes possibly acquired through horizontal gene transfer. The study lays the foundation for future global ecogenomic and geogenomic studies.

Comparative genomics reveals insights into cyanobacterial evolution and habitat adaptation

Meng-Yun Chen et al.

Summary: Based on phylogenetic and comparative genomic analyses of 650 cyanobacterial genomes, this study revealed that terrestrial cyanobacteria expand gene families to cope with fluctuating environments, while many marine strains undergo gene contraction to adapt to nutrient-poor conditions. Genes strongly associated with specific habitats, such as those involved in light sensing, chemotaxis, and nutrient transporters, are crucial for the survival and adaptation of cyanobacteria. Furthermore, a significant proportion of genes facilitating habitat adaptation are acquired through horizontal gene transfer, with terrestrial cyanobacteria showing higher rates of genetic exchanges.

Novel Two-Component System-Like Elements Reveal Functional Domains Associated with Restriction-Modification Systems and paraMORC ATPases in Bacteria

Daniel Bellieny-Rabelo et al.

Summary: Two newly predicted protein domains, Response_reg_2 and HEF_HK, show high structural similarity with typical domains of response regulators (RRs) and histidine kinases (HKs), respectively, suggesting a potential new two-component system (TCS) in bacteria. The genes encoding these domains exhibit a high linkage, indicating a possible functional association and evolutionary relationship with known HKs and RRs. Additionally, the genomic regions where these predicted systems are located show overrepresentation of restriction-modification (R-M) systems and GHKL family domain HATPase_c_3, further supporting their potential role in bacterial signaling pathways.
