Obesity downregulates lipid metabolism genes in first trimester placenta

Aisha Rasool et al.

Summary: Placentas of obese women show impaired fatty acid metabolism and lipid accumulation from early pregnancy. The expression of genes associated with fatty acid oxidation, uptake, synthesis, and storage is reduced in these placentas, particularly in placentas of male fetuses. The PPAR alpha pathway is impacted by obesity and PPAR alpha antagonism reduces fatty acid oxidation in 1st trimester placental explants.

Placental mobilization of free fatty acids contributes to altered materno-fetal transfer in obesity

Birgit Hirschmugl et al.

Summary: The study found that maternal-to-fetal transfer of free fatty acids was significantly increased in obese pregnant women, particularly the clearance of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Mathematical modeling revealed a lower tissue storage capacity for DHA in obese placentae.

Saturated free fatty acids induce placental trophoblast lipoapoptosis

Sathish Kumar Natarajan et al.

Summary: Obesity during pregnancy increases the risk for maternal complications and offspring diseases. Saturated fatty acids induce trophoblast lipoapoptosis, while monounsaturated fatty acids have a protective effect against FFA-induced trophoblast lipoapoptosis.
