Investigating calcification-related candidates in a non-symbiotic scleractinian coral, Tubastraea spp.

Laura Capasso et al.

Summary: This study identified calcification-related ion transporters and other candidate genes in ahermatypic non-symbiotic scleractinian corals using tissue micro-dissection and RNA-sequencing. The research found several known calcification-related candidate genes in these corals and also identified several ion transporter candidate genes that play a role in scleractinian calcification for the first time.

Step in Time: Biomineralisation of Bivalve's Shell

Victoria Louis et al.

Summary: Biomineralisation is the process by which organisms induce the precipitation of minerals to form hard tissues, and shells of bivalves are used as biological archives of paleo-environmental and paleo-climatic conditions. However, the environmental drivers of shell increment formation are still poorly understood.

Characterization and functional analysis of a chitinase gene: Evidence of Ch-chit participates in the regulation of biomineralization in Crassostrea hongkongensis

Qingliang Liao et al.

Summary: Chitinase plays a crucial role in shell formation and defense mechanisms in Crassostrea hongkongensis. Expression of Ch-chit was significantly upregulated in response to shell damage, and was highest in trochophore larvae. These results provide important insights into the molecular mechanisms of biomineralization in C. hongkongensis.

Unveiling Putative Functions of Mucus Proteins and Their Tryptic Peptides in Seven Gastropod Species Using Comparative Proteomics and Machine Learning-Based Bioinformatics Predictions

Viroj Tachapuripunya et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively identified putative bioactive peptides from the mucus proteomes of seven commonly found or commercially valuable gastropods using biochemical, mass spectrometric, and bioinformatics approaches. High-throughput prediction programs were developed with more than 95% averaged accuracy to identify functional categories of putative bioactive peptides and peptides with multiple bioactive properties. Antihypertensive, drug-delivering, and antiparasitic peptides were predominant, providing potential applications in medical, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic fields.

The investigation of reinforcement properties of nano-CaCO3 synthesized from Achatina fulica snail shell through mechanochemical methods on epoxy nanocomposites

O. J. Gbadeyan et al.

Summary: The study examined the reinforcement properties of nano-CaCO3 synthesized from Achatina fulica snail shell, finding significant improvements in thermal stability and mechanical properties of neat epoxy with different filler content. Notably, inclusion of 1% Achatina fulica snail shell nanoparticles led to a 75% increase in tensile strength, over 25% increase in stiffness, 25% increase in impact strength, and 35% increase in hardness of neat epoxy. These findings highlight the potential of nano-CaCO3 from A. fulica snail shell for nanocomposite fabrication.

Snail mucus from the mantle and foot of two land snails, Lissachatina fulica and Hemiplecta distincta, exhibits different protein profile and biological activity

Nattaphop Noothuan et al.

Summary: The protein composition and biological activities of snail slime differ between the mantle and foot secretions of two snail species, with the mantle secretion showing higher antibacterial activity. The slime from Hemiplecta distincta also displayed antibacterial properties, but to a lesser extent compared to Lissachatina fulica. Both foot and mantle slime exhibited anti-tyrosinase and antioxidant activity without significant differences. These findings suggest potential variations in protein compositions and activities for medical applications.
